The problem is mass account creation from mass absolutely different ips.
It's not a range or ranges to ban by mask.
It have been 55661 accounts created yesterday and 57789 created today. Also the same for all this week.
I don't see how it can be resolved by bots /ipban or w/e.

Also /ipban is not effective against thousands of ips, it will just reduce the server permormance.

Any kind of bot will work if you can find any template in account name (could be avoided easily).
Versioncheck will not help for bot configured properly.

Other servers are just not under attack, thats why they works.

I'd say there's not internal solution accepted by bnetd protocol and war2 client to handle this.
It doesn't support captcha, it's not able to show any sensibe error message to client while connected (just senseless red window about something wrong while connecting).
The easiest way is just to deny account creation, but it's not what we really want i think.

So we have to implement some avoiding line in addition to bnet, let me think what to do...

Register account from webpage for new account. We need to come up with a method to filter the bullshit. Query the accounts with 0 wins and delete. People might lose Smurfs account but it's not important... now we can have a capcha... you don't even need email as long as we have captcha.

Change the TOS for account create make the first lines create account at website not here...

creating an account via the website and requiring an email confirmation like iccup is not that big of a deal, why not just do it that way? if you think about new players registering their accounts with email confirmation will also make the server seem more legit and less gimmicky, in their minds at least. Being part of the advertisement team you don't understand how many people got cold feet about getting into wc2, because they thought it was a virus or a big joke, it really doesn't make any sense, they are just being prejudice, but at the same time, catering to stupid people is what advertisement is all about.
