A diplomatic dispute between Poland and Israel over pending Polish legislation that would outlaw blaming Poland for the crimes of the Holocaust, has led to an outburst of anti-Semitic comments in Poland, including some in the government-controlled media.

As a result, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that it was “following with concern the expressions of an anti-Semitic nature in the Polish media, and was considering an inquiry on the matter through the [Israeli] Embassy in Warsaw.”

Polish Holocaust and World War II scholars, as well as international organizations including the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial center in Jerusalem, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Simon Wiesenthal Center, are among groups who have criticized the law. Critics have said they fear the law could lead to self-censorship in academia and that the legislation — which also mentions "other crimes against peace and humanity" — is so broad that it could be used to fight any form of criticism against Poland by authorities – who already being accused of eroding democratic standards.

The director of the state-run television station TVP 2, Marcin Wolski, even went so far as to say Monday on air that the Nazi death camps should actually be called Jewish. "Who managed the crematoria there?" he asked — a reference to the fact that death camp prisoners, usually Jews, were forced as slave laborers to help dispose of gas chamber victims.

Wolski was joined on his show by a right-wing commentator, Rafal Ziemkiewicz, who only a day earlier had used an extremely derogatory term to refer to Jews on Twitter. His comment was later removed.

And on another talk show Saturday, the day after the lower house of parliament approved the law, on Polish state TV, anti-Semitic messages posted by viewers on Twitter were shown at the bottom of the screen as one participant said that a Jewish guest was "not really Polish." The state television director later apologized for the messages, blaming a technical glitch that caused them to go onto the screen unedited.

In another case, a Polish state radio commentator, Piotr Nisztor, suggested that Poles who support the Israeli position should consider relinquishing their citizenship.

I would say that Poland is fascist today, given that they're led by something called the "Law and Justice" party.  Even the name of that party is insanely fascist.

a) Poland looks pretty big on that map.

b) I don't know where Auschwitz is, I'm not a WW2 history buff and the location of one specific facility is not relevant.

c) I am not brainwashed. Most of the information on this subject I have has come from this thread, and a couple of internet searches I have done after reading this thread.

We were taught some general information about WW2 when I went to school. The basic message we were taught was that the Germans were responsible, and the first thing they did was invade Poland and oppress the Poles. Prior to reading this thread I have never heard anything negative about the activity of Polish nationals in WW2 ever. Mainly, I would guess, because I'm pretty disinterested in war history.

99.9% of any negative influence on me about Poland has come directly from YOU. I don't really know any other Poles and for the first 40 years of my life I probably spent a total of maybe 1-2 minutes thinking about Poland. Ever. In my life. Couldn't care less.

I will resist the impulse to jugde all of the Polish people by the very poor example that you set as a cultural ambassador, as I feel sure there must be many intelligent, educated and enlightened in Poland.

This is 100% a law jailing people for speaking anything other that the "official" version of events. It goes right to the very foundations of fascism. Because an obsession with terms and phrases like "law and justice" is a fascistic type of thinking, right along with fetishizing the military, police forces, and so on.  This plus nationalism, especially identity-focused nationalism, plus right wing policy is what makes up fascism.  It seems like Poland is checking off every single box and a future Adolf Hitler would be quite at home there.  Yes, it's the same in the United States, especially with the rise of Trump and his racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

The US media is so awash with military porn and troop sucking that it's shocking.  Just this fall alone we had like 3 new shows premiering at once about the US military, usually leaning into fascist concepts even in their titles: "The Brave," "Valor," and "SEAL Team."  There was also a show about police called 911 so really make that four new shows at once all while someone as close to outright fascist as I can hope to imagine here sits in the White House.

This is a difference between us, I recognize my country's fascism, but you're so nationalistic yourself that you're obsessed with the Polish identity and intensely defensive about critiques of Poland!
