How to open MPQ files

with the mpq editor

i open which mpq file?

warcraft 2 bne has 2 mpq files

war2dat.mpq (22megs)
and war2patch.mpq (266kb)


if i open war2dat.mpq, file has no rez folder.
it has 2 folders named:
"font" & "smk"
and a tons of files in the root folder that include .pcx, .xxx, .wav .pud and game executables (but no .bin)

if i close and  open war2patch.mpq instead
it only has 1 folder called REZ,





and if i open any of those bins, it only shows the welcome screen in some weird blue color.

and there are no files in root folder.

so, bottom line... where the tbl files ?

Wrong mpq bro not patch.... you have a corrected mpq because the first one aka the bigger one. Has all the thing to need to make your changes.

Install war2 again in different directory and reopen it...

Youre having a dumb moment lol. You have been in the correct one long time ago looool Don't worry we all do it sometimes

that mpq is called out when war2 had an update. And those files are called and used when war2 asks for them Instead of getting the files from the original mpq...

what i did was
a fresh install of original war2 bne [spanish]

i ran the 2.02 patch

that was it.

so
i am to uninstall and reinstall in diff folder, do i install or not install the patch or what

was using Ladik's MPQ Editor

then tried winmpq
didnt work either
 it also showed many unknowns

then i tried pyms  mpq and i can see the tbl files ..

what tbl files im supposed to look for

cuz this pympq editor also shows many unknowns.
there are a few visible tbl... but a whole lot of unknowns


i dont remember back then 3 years ago when i started this project having an issue with it being in spanish
maybe just tell me whats the right mpq editor to use or wtf

the only thing i can think of that's different now from back then is that my current windows is in english and back then was in spanish but dunno, doesnt sound like that could be something to make me see unknowns??

Dude find all the TBL Files and extract them but make sure to have current word list for the mpq... open with TBL editor

Edit if the Spanish version  mpq are different for English. It's going to be a lot more work. If you want extract the English version convert those to spanish.

Or give me a copy of the Spanish version I'll take a look.

I never used Ladik's MPQ Editor, i don't know how it works.

The only editor worked fine for me is winmpq 1.64.

You also should use proper listfile for it to avoid "many unknowns".
Follow: options -> file lists and add listfile for war2bne. I'll attach it here.

After that you can open your mpq-file and you will see most files with proper names.

There are totally 3 mpq-files in war2: war2dat.mpq, War2Patch.mpq and install.exe
