my virus checker killed it. any ideas?
get a better virus checker?

lol, idk.. often AV software will have an issue with any exe that is downloaded if it can't work out what it is. As I compiled that from source yeaterday i know there's nothing nasty there.

IMO the best AV test is a decent firewall.

These days there really aren't any actual viruses left. There's all manner of trojans and malware and other nasties, they are all there to do 1 or both of 2 things: (a) steal information &/or (b) control your system remotely.

For any of these things to be useful the one thing they all have to do is access your network. Usually the thing that causes the infection is just simple trojan that then downloads and installs whatever the asshole who wrote it really wants on your system. Certainly if it's a small .exe like the one I posted, there isn't really room for a .pud editor and a full rootkit or the like.

The exe is 321Kb - just the splash screen is a 141Kb bitmap if its kept as 8-Bit. If you just save it as a normal 24-bit windows bitmap, it ends up being 421Kb, or substantially bigger than the entire editor .exe

Simple trojan downloaders can be quite small, but if you firewall such small executables, you will find that anything nasty will always try to access the network, or they will unpack another little embedded exe that will, and you will suddenly get some random program, usually in a temp directory, that is trying to connect to somewhere.

The ONLY thing the editor "writes" to is .PUD files that you tell it to, or .BMP files that you ask it to create. It doesn't access your network, system registry or ANYTHING else at all.

*the load/save/browse dialogs do check/update the registry with regards to the last accessed folder but this is just normal windows behavior

Yeah, can you share that map editor?

sure np.

Like i say, Its a bit rough around the edges but does some useful stuff.

Will thumbnail all your maps. The clipboard is good. Mirroring is good for making symmatrical maps. cut/paste is handy - its a bit kluncky but it works MOST OF THE TIME - crashes occasionally. Its a really old app and it needs re-writing but I just dont care hard enough...

and it's got this uber kewl splash screen xD..

     DOWNLOAD

oh and I added the unbreakable wall thing recently too.
Will also swap player units... like of u want to put teal where oj is or something, just swaps them all.
"Set all mines to max" if you're making a custom saves you selecting every mine and doing it by hand etc...

if you want to copy/paste to a different map: copy then file->load next map then paste (doesn't use system clipboard).

have a play round with it. you'll work it out.

the thumbnail thing just creates a small .bmp file for each .pud then u can just view like this in windows:

( just select "thumbnails" from the menu then point the dialog at your "maps" folder)

--> oh and let me know if it just crashes instantly, some of my older stuff had issues with DEP (data execution protection) because of the way i used to embed chunks of ML, don't remember the PUD editor having any of that, but if it does i'll have a look and weed it out <<<<

*Added undo/redo function on request, also drag and drop support UPDATED V1.2.1 HERE

Description:
Spoiler
I was bored this afternoon so I added an undo/redo function to the edit menu. I also enabled drag & drop so you can just drop a pud file on there and it will open - been meaning to do that since forever.

There are no CTRL-Z etc. hotkeys, but you can do ALT-E, U  or  ALT-E, R if you want.

If you select a heap of PUD files and drop them on the editor it will open them one after the other, but then you can go back with UNDO.

Just remember that it will still save to the filename of the last file opened, by default (the name on the status bar at the bottom)

As i understand, if "one peon only" is active, peons will be located in start locations, that will mean in the center of the map (Where X and O located), not in the corner...

ok. Ive never really noticed. I always just assumed that was just the start position for the screen, but it makes sense. easy fix.

Ahh. Forgot about that, yes i used a chop map as a 64x64 template

is that even legal? Why do we even pay you if youre just copying stuff from someone elses work?

Try this. I just made it - not tested but it should work ok

Thx, good job! Did you just made each tree manually or copypasted from the original one someway?
Also farms instead of peons means melee is not possible (no way to set the checkbox "use map settings")

Yes, my map editor does copy/paste terrain.

I wrote it about 15 years ago so its not the most perfect app ive ever developed, but i've added bits and pieces to it over the years as i needed them so it does some useful stuff.

--> ok done peons instead of farms too.

Oh, just checked, walls are unbreakeable, lol!
So both maps are good, exactly that's what i need, thx!

Also map default resources are as big as in CHOP...

Ahh. Forgot about that, yes i used a chop map as a 64x64 template to copy the NWTR onto so it still had maxed starting res, and the original description from that map. Have updated those on the post above.

Should be ok now.

Website & Forum Discussion / please explain to polandd

Please explain to polandd that he must post a SS when asked.

If he does not post, I think a 1 week suspension is appropriate. Mostly because he's a new player that needs to be discouraged from MHing, but also because he has just learned how to rush grunts then turned into an abuse spewing asshole.

Also would someone please tlee Yamon that sitting in the channel telling people NOT to post SS when asked is not appropriate. As a long term player Yamon should be educating and encouraging new players. But instead its example #473 of Yamon being a dick.

There's a few calls to GetDesktopWindow followed by GetDC, this gets the device context of the windows desktop (being the top level window), so it looks like its, in effect just resizing the desktop to 640x480 then writing directly to it. Possibly. At lot of it relates to dialog boxes and stuff, hard to tell without spending more time.

Was having a look at other threads and found this desktop SS from USA~Archer. I get a similar issue when I am alt-tabbed and I disconnect from the network, but seeing it side-by-side with the window is helpful.

After seeing this I would guess the reasons would be:

 - WC2 was originally written for DOS. When they made BNE they needed to port the display code for windows, so somebody came up with the bit of DirectX code to change the display to 640x480x256 and provide a handle to it, so the original dos code could use that.

 - The basic channel screen frame etc. uses this handle, but the code that writes the text and dialog boxes etc. to the screen was done seperately, and that is what is being done with the calls I mentioned above.

This is what is happening in this SS. The borders etc. are being written to the DC of the window, but the text is being written directly to the desktop so its appearing in the top-left 640x480 section of the desktop, regardless of the position of the window.

Anyway, the point is I would guess that replacing all (or perhaps most of) the calls to GetDesktopWindow with calls to GetActiveWindow could fix this problem. If not, then converting the co-ords with either ClientToScreen or MapWindowPoints should work, but this would be a little bit trickier to patch as it isn't a straight 1:1 replacement.

lambchops you are like the dumbest person on this forum. I can never read more than 3 lines of your useless drivel. And the fact that you agree with the socialists just hurts them.

LOL.

For the record I think its a great pity that socialism simply does not work.

The reason it does not work is that the human race contains too many small-minded, entitled, bigoted, hypocrtical morons like yourself who have allowed its ideals to be corrupted by smarter assholes every time it has been attempted.

Its easy to be correct when your point is "doing the decent thing won't work.", you just have to be yourself. Q.E.D.

okay, i can just as easily find tons of shit saying the contrary, will it be scientific documented evidence when you disagree with it?

(hillarious propaganda video removed)

There are so many people in the world who just have no clue about what the word "scientific" means. This is a classic example.

I actually put myself through listening to all 11 minutes of that, just to confirm that it is nothing but propaganda, and contains nothing but the author's biased opinion and no science whatsoever. There was one statistic quoted from the US census prior to 1930, but then he went on to say that this meant a whole pile of unrelated claptrap was true.

The rules of science are very clear. There is no 'grey area' - that is the whole point. Science must be repeatable. You must prove it, and you must be able to describe it in such a way that somebody else can conduct an experiment based on your hypothesis and get the same results.

All genuine scientific studies of value are then "peer reviewed". That means that if you are a physicist who wants to claim a new discovery, you publish it - then all the rest of the physicists in the world who are working in the same field (i.e. your peers) have the opportunity to test it out and and decide if its actually true or not.

Although most people don't see it, the competition between scientists is absolutely fierce. For every scientist who wants to claim a new discovery, there are another 10 who are competing for the same research grants and are desperate to prove them wrong, and they will, if they can. But if something is a scientific fact, it can't be proved wrong.

You can't take 1 fact then use that to claim that something else is true. That is called conjecture.

Science is NOT:

- Stuff that is said in fancy video presentations.
- Stuff that people preface with "scentific studies show"
- Stuff that actors in white coats say.
- Stuff that genuine scientists say!... they can be corrupt or nuts or just plain wrong, like any other person.

It's only science, if its provable, repeatable and peer reviewed.

Nobody reading this post can deny it, because the scientific process is what created the computer you're using to read it. Your computer does not work based on somebody's opinion, it works according to the known laws of physics, that were discovered using the scientific process.

Sir Isaac Newton -- The Discoverer of Gravity! Sir Isaac Newton was an English mathematician and mathematician and physicist who lived from 1642-1727. The legend is that Newton discovered Gravity when he saw a falling apple while thinking about the forces of nature.

So based on this argument, gravity  isn't real?

... and that is exactly the sort of twisted pseudo-logic that charletans have invented and spoon fed to simpletons since the dawn of society. It quotes a fact - in this case a fact involving a scientist (ooooo it must be true!), then goes on to make an unrelated claim that pushes somebody's agenda.

I amazes me that in 2016 there are still people doughy enough to fall for this sort of garbage.

humanity has always built off of what others have done, all of human history is just flat out progress, all the way

No. People get things wrong. Entire civilizations rise and fall. Many, many people tried to fly by flapping their arms, but no matter how many people tried this exercise it never helped the invention of the aeroplane.

One thing I always observe in young people like yourself Tora, is the belief that the people of the past were somehow ignorant.

Clearly some parts of society remain every bit as ignorant today as they have ever been.

Ok, I skimmed that letter can't say I read every word, but I do love your passion for the game, its a truely beautiful thing.

I would say something to the people who like to give the admins a hard time, there are a few of you, and this is not addressed specifically and any one. Please consider this:

- This server IS wc2. There is no other place that you can play it online, because there are no other players anywhere else. If this server dies, the game dies with it.

- This is a fact. Wishing this were not true will not change it.

- Providing rational arguments why this should not be the case will not change it.

- Ranting and screaming abuse because you are so upset that this is what has become of the game you love will not change it.

- Praying to the divinity of your choice is probably your best bet, but based on all evidence so far, this still will not change it.

- When you vent your frustration by publicly putting down the people who run this server, you are putting down the server, and by extension damaging WC2, because like it or not, this is all we have left.

- Even if you are honestly convinced that your statements are correct, justified and well deserved by the people you are targeting, please be smart about it. Hurling abuse NEVER makes you or your case seem more credible, and I believe it truely hurts the game.

Hold on to the passion, but also use your intellect. None of you are stupid. We are a small community. We are all we have left. Looking after each other, and particularly the admins is looking after the game.
