Title: A new guy with his old ideas - Freecraft, Wargus, Stratagus
Post by: Khosmos on March 05, 2015, 05:53:21 PM
I am very happy with War2Combat 4.01.
It worked very well and show me the amazing work you are doing. Congrtulations.
It worked with BNET. Wow. I love it.

Let me talk about me.

I used to play WC2 in last century.
I never was a good player, but I had a lot of funny hours.

I am not sure if the tool's name was Kali.
We use it to create IPX nets over internet connections. :-)

Some time after I was introduced to FreeCraft.
It was great until Blizzard bullied the developers.

They stopped, but an open souce project never die, it is abandoned...

The source was split, bu another team, and now exist 2 pieces, or more...
- Stratagus - the engine
- Wargus - the skin(?)

Stratagus is great, with a lot of improvements
Wargus is an small project only for import multimedia files from WC2 CD

I would like to say here that I am not an expert and I do not want to own the truth, but share my feelings, ok?

Wargus has a better usability than War2Combat.
War2Combat has BNET

Could someone explain about problems in a fusion?
I do not understand all implications, but I can imagine a better game experience .

TIA
Khosmos

Where are you from? Maybe speak in your native language, we have alot of people here from different countries. I don't really get what youre asking here.

Wargus is a fan-made clone of WC2 that runs on Stratagus (an open source RTS engine) and is apparently superior to the original game -- more customizable, more nuanced gameplay & features, runs on Linux, etc. War2BNE however has the advantage of working with bnet, so Khosmos is suggesting that we direct our energies into somehow combining the two games to get the best features of both (superior Stratagus engine + bnet for multiplayer). I honestly don't even know if that's possible, perhaps programming-minded people will weigh in.

The main problem though is that Blizzard shut down Freecraft in 2002 (the original project) which is why it was split into Stratagus & Wargus. (Wargus doesn't come bundled with any files from WC2, the user has to furnish those in order to run the game.) How to get around that? For that matter, isn't war2combat in the same boat and subject to getting shut down if Blizzard ever happened to take notice? Maybe they just don't give a damn anymore and it's safe to attempt a resurrection of Freecraft. :3

Hello & welcome to the forum btw Khosmos.

Hi,

Morbid and mousEtopher, thank you for your attention.

My point:

Wargus
   - open source
   - multiplatform
      - Windows, Linux, Android,...
   - HD
   - Opengl
   - improved usability
      - selecting units to 18, rally point, autospell,...
   - optional ideas
      - growing trees
   - ...
War2Combat
   - BNET

Who understand BNET protocol?
Is it possible?

TIA

Would be interesting to combine the features, but a lot of purists may not want to select 18 units, have autospell, rally point, etc.  It would be fun to try, but it would change the game.

autospell is going a bit to far but rally points, 18 units, unit queues should all be fine and are standard in modern rts's

But do people want to "modernize" War2?  I only would if it was being re-released by Blizzard to a wide audience... ie resurrection of the game

If it's just among us, I'd rather play it as it was originally designed.

I rather not see unit queues on warcraft 2, rally points are a 40/60 for me. The playstation version of Warcraft 2 lets you select 16 units so I wouldn't mind it increasing from 9 to 16 instead of 18. But yeah i'm strongly against unit queues.

Rally points and multi queue production should be added to the game.

Hi,

let me separate points.

This is not about:
- I like this
- I do not like that
- Feature YYYY may be possible in XXXX too

This is about to create an open environment to make WC2 battles a better experience.

WARGUS+STRATAGUS are live projects.
They allow us:
- Classic WC2
- Better WC2
- Something different from WC2
- ...

My proposal is: Something very close to WC2, but another possibilities exist.

My question:
Do we know how to implement BNET? The protocol, client code and server code.

I tried freecraft years ago (and stratagus also).
(I even rewrote some graphics code for freecraft to reduce windows size and increase game speed for very slow computers we had in my school).
My own impression: graphics is similar, but gameplay dynamic is absolutely different.

After you play war2 about half a year (PvP, not campaign olny), it becomes obvious.
Each smallest element: pathfinding, trees chopping, place to appear from building, lamber/tower/other bugs - everything.
It's not so diffucult to remove all the additional features (like training queue, additional buildings, rally points, etc), but it will not be usual war2.
I think, most (all) build-orders, maps should be played different.

That's why i don't consider wargus an alternative to war2. I mean, i don't think these people playing war2 for 20 years will move to wargus.
But anyway, wargus project could be interesting itself.

Do we know how to implement BNET? The protocol, client code and server code.
Well, i don't think BNET makes sense for wargus. Yes, we have BNET-server called PvPGN and it's opensource, so it's possible, but i think there are much better and much easier ideas for players communication to implement to the new game.

Khosmos, what's going on in the wargus world now? Is there any active developer team now? Would be interesing to be informed about this project.

Wargus seems to have some dev activity:

I've got/had a couple ( embarrassing ) lines of code in wargus  8)

Wargus seems to have some dev activity:
Wow, nice to see it's pretty alive!
I'll try to build that as soon as i have enough time.

wow: Full BNE support in one of the lastest commits. I didn't think it's SO alive.

so it works with pvpgn ? wow that would be huge.

afaik, it just means that wargus can rip game assets from the BNE CD instead of requiring the DOS CD

Wargus 2.3 has just been released!

You also need stratagus to play:

Well true story about needing the cd But last night i installed the android version of stratugus I used a bootleg copy of starcraft to work fine. I'm sure you could easily rip what you need.

I don't think it will work with combat files, they have been regrouped with some combat logic, but need to check that. Maybe it's easy to make combat compatible as wargus source.
You can download war2bne iso and mount (or unpack) it.
