Title: Add a calendar.
Post by: Nox on March 24, 2015, 10:04:14 PM
I know you guys can add a calendar to the forum.

It will be pretty cool.

So you can add alot of things in it..

Like official date of every tournaments, who get ban, wich day and how much time,  add some important updated, whats comming new on server, etc.

It's not a bad idea, but it would just be another thing to keep up with and I don't think the number of people who would use it justifies the effort involved in setting it up right now. Maybe in the future, and ideally in a form that would allow it to link with both the forum & the website.

if you don't put in any effort how do you expect the game to grow?

This is a very good suggestion, how are people supposed to know about tournaments without navigating thru the entire forums and reading every thread? Having a nice calendar would get more action in tournaments and upcoming events.

I don't think we should smite any idea that can help move this game forward. If it is a technical issue? OK there is some merit to hold off on the idea...But because she does not want to put the effort into it? Nice leadership you rodent.

I wouldn't mind creating a Google Calendar for War2 and passing on the embed code to the admins.  This would be a great addition to the site and the forum.  This calendar could be shared and edited by every admin.  The calendar is then more likely to get updated when an admin hosts a tournament. We can even take it a step further and sync the calendar with Facebook events so that every time an event is created on Facebook it will also post on the calendar.

I'd like to move forward with this.  Who do I send the embed code to?  If the admins have GMail accounts, please PM them to me and I will send an invite to the calendar.  I'll also discuss this with Burnt since I think he would use it the most as he hosts majority of the tournaments and manages the Facebook page (I think?).

If any admin would like to implement this in the way I described, they are more than welcome to take charge of it.

It's not a bad idea and I'm really glad you thought of it.  The admins aren't being biased toward your idea.  They have legitimate concerns about the calendar not being regularly updated.  I'm merely trying to provide a solution to this concern and take charge of this project with their approval.  The new forum has been designed in a way that it's focused on community driven improvements and contributions.  Antagonizing the admins constantly isn't going to help push this idea forward.  Instead, asking yourself how this can be accomplished in a way that it can work would be a much better way to make use of your time.  Brainstorm with the rest of the community if you need to.  Most would be glad to help you if you remain civil.

Community is not about 3 admins who abuse of their power and 4 members of the forum who lick balls to be someone.

We already know this community, commuity is from the game himself, if they dont take time there i dont even see how the fuck they are able to take decision for this game.

These admins or biase and kill this game by being jalous, everyone know i can do alot for this game, there alot of peoples who already told them they want me as admin.

Because i know how to be attractive, i know how to help peoples from forum or directly in the game, im creative from any kind of view, i also got time to be one of the most active admin, i love this game and i want to improve it.

But they try to cock block any of my ideas and try to make it later on some cheap version to do like if i have never do nothing for this game or never had the idea.

I respect their work, even if they work like lazy ass and just dint realise it because they never seen other admins, but i dont respect them to killing this game for their own satisfaction.

Props for taking some initiative. Google calendar sounds like a potentially good solution since it would be trivial to embed in both site & forum, and the FB events sync is a nice feature. (Though I'm not sure how often Burnt creates actual events for tournies etc? I think usually he just does that for the festival in July.) Are you also volunteering to keep the calendar up to date? That's what the project would really need to get off the ground.

You had originally offered the Google Calender solution to Equinox and it's a shame he didn't take charge of it right there.  I only built upon that idea.

I can keep the calendar up to date as long as I'm notified of events by the admins.  I still hope to make the calendar available for editing between all admins though.  I'd like to try to work closely with Burnt on this if possible.  I wouldn't mind taking on the responsibility of creating Facebook events for the server either.  If the event is a tournament, we could even post a link on the event page for a challonge.com bracket that players can sign up on.  I'm sure we would definitely see an improvement in attendance for events/tournaments.  This will also help lessen Burnt's workload for tournaments.  I'll try to get in touch with Burnt about syncing the calendar with Facebook events.  Once I've created the calendar and added any upcoming events, I will pass on the embed code to you.

All admins, please feel free to contact me if you  would like to have access to the calendar.

We're making a lot of progress on the calendar and it's still in the works.  From what I understand, it will be embedded somewhere on the en.war2.ru homepage.  I'm not sure yet when it will be added.  I would like to add it to the forum as well but from what I've gathered on it, we're currently unable to do so.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions for the calender.

Obviously, but mousetopher said she can't do it so I am offering an alternative suggstion okay? Also, there are probably going to be like 3-4 events a month max so having a seperate one of the forums isn't a big deal. Not going to take more than a minute to enter the events every month.

I'm not sure what the procedure would be for giving community members access to post on the SMF calendar.  It may be something that would fall onto the admins.

I prefer simplicity and minimizing the amount of steps that it takes to accomplish something (especially if it's something I do routinely).  Less is more.  Don't get me wrong, this could work if we had a volunteer willing to keep up with it but adding on another step is something that I'm not personally willing to do.

Here is a solution that came to mind while posting this:  Why not add an external link to the Google Calendar on the forum?  At least we'll then have some form of access to it on the forum.

Syncing Google Calendar with SMF Calendar may be possible one day and I plan to request this feature from Simple Machines.  Many would like to be able to do this on their own forums and I think with enough support it may become possible.

The calendar is very important. I'm sorry to say I don't see War2 continuously growing. What will keep this small community alive is TOURNAMENTS. Set periods of time where we push for people to login for a few days per month.

It is AMAZING that there are enough players that most of the time, I can still just log in and play with someone almost right away! However, as things trend downward this will no longer be the case. As it is, there are times that I log in and no ones really playing (however this is probably related to the fact that the majority of the community is on the other side of the world as me)

In the future, there may not be enough players for us to log in and play whenever we want. Tournaments will be what gets people together online at the same time. Once tournaments die, then we all just have to email eachother or something to schedule matches.

From a Web Design perspective:

Downvote on a manual forum calendar BIGTIME, it may only take a few minutes to manually transfer info to a forum calendar - but those few minutes are a waste of time and admins have enough to do without having to do that too

Upvote on putting a link to the calendar as a forum topic LIKE DOWNLOADS, simple, problem solved, no manual updates needed

Upvote on putting the Calendar on the frontpage of War2.ru / en.war2.ru

Embedding the calendar into the forum isn't a problem at all, I didn't mean to imply that it was, I just haven't gotten to it yet. Pretty sure it can be on its own stand-alone page, like the arcade. Got it set up on the site here: http://en.war2.ru/upcoming-events/ (http://en.war2.ru/upcoming-events/)

There's an (old) existing plugin for syncing SMF calendar to Gcal which could be a nice solution, but it'd need testing & possibly updating before we could implement it. If it does work, then calendar-posting priviledges can be granted to certain users that would benefit from them (like people who want to host tournies). All events can be added via the forum and they'll automatically pushed to Gcal, which in turn is embedded to the website. Simple, effective & nonredundant. For now though, we can just embed the Gcal in both locations.

Awesome.  This would be even better.  I wasn't sure there was a way to give users permissions to post events on the SMF calendar.  I suppose the gCalSync mod is worth trying out then.

The calendar looks great on the site.  I didn't know it could be mixed in like that with the design of the website.  Bravo on all of the hard work and thanks for allowing me to help contribute to this project.

Sounds great will help out however I can.

I've been trying to get in touch with you about syncing the calendar with Facebook Events.  It looks like I'm able to create an event for the War2 Facebook page without any special privileges.  This could be another option for players who host tournaments.  They could create the Facebook event and have it added to the Google Calendar automatically.

Now that I'm really researching this, I think I may be able to take care of this on my own.  I'm not really sure we can sync to the calendar directly from the War2 Facebook page when an event is created.  However, I could create a Facebook account and subscribe to the War2 Facebook Events and easily sync it that way.
