Why do you people watch youtube videos about this stuff. Over 30 minutes on that one. What does it say, just tell me. I wrote a post already about all the reasons, you don’t reply to it and just spit out some link to some random shit. I guess if he says what I already wrote here he might not be an idiot but I’ll assume he’s dumb until I hear otherwise

like il said, putin has his detractors in russia but his support currently sits at 75%... so yes he can win a fair election.  most of his opposition is controlled token opposition too...

the rule is two consecutive terms so putin sat two terms then put his stooge medvedev at the top of the ticket for one term.  it was perfectly legal and the russian public supported it since he is the first competent leader they've had since like the 80s lol.

The video itself is recent, though, and it was breaking news to those outside of NATO leadership, including in Russia!

@ASBMilitary·Jan 14
This is all bad news. Russian state media is running with it, reporting it the same way we did from the initial source. Once this gets out to Russian public, it’s bad news. And it already got out 20 mins ago.

Many over the years have predicted trying to admit more eastern European nations into NATO would lead to a Russian response.  I linked a Guardian article from someone who had said it for years, here it is again: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/feb/28/nato-expansion-war-russia-ukraine?utm_term=Autofeed&CMP=twt_gu&utm_medium&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1646074880

Epic fake news everyone, well done to America doing a great job filling the media with disinformation.  We love to see it, apparently!

Also, there is no such thing as a leftist media, which I say just because I keep seeing Lance and TK talking about it.  All the media is one media: a corporate, capitalist media that works for the rich against people-oriented programs (like Medicare For All), and follows the direction of the US State Department (which also serves the interests of capitalists and imperialism), regularly railing against official US enemies and featuring former generals calling for more arms shipments all to the military industrial complex's delight.  This media has two stripes, a liberal stripe that celebrates Black Lives Matter and calls for abortion rights and so on, and a conservative stripe, pro-gun etc, that's become more and more white nationalist in recent years.  This media helps keep those who still consider themselves Democrats and Republicans dutifully at odds against each other without ever examining the rich and powerful.

Well, the Nazis are disgusting and something Putin can point to for PR during the invasion, and they are a real problem in Ukraine, but Lance is right: the real reason Russia is invading is certainly because of the geopolitics involved, not because of the Nazis.  Not exactly "let's rebuild the Soviet Union, let's land grab," but more about the security of the country.

Take a look at Russia's western border below the Baltic Sea: you've got Estonia and Latvia, both members of the anti-Russian military alliance NATO along with Lithuania.

Then below that you've got Ukraine: they had a president in Yanukovic who was friendly to Russia, and then when some organic protests sprung up in western Ukraine, the West took advantage.  Despite the fact that Euromaidan was primarily popular only in western Ukraine and hovered at around 45% approval in the country, the democratically elected president was deposed and replaced by people friendly to the West.  The United States and other western governments were directly involved in this overthrow, and were caught on tape selecting the new leadership of Ukraine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Nuland#Leaked_private_phone_conversation).  How would you feel if Russia oversaw a revolution in Mexico and picked out the next leaders?  Would the US invade Mexico?  I think it would!

South of Ukraine is Belarus.  The US and the rest of the West have been trying to "Guaido" Belarus, simply recognizing an alternative leader, pretending that is the actual leader, and then sanctioning the state and its people into poverty to attempt an overthrow by mass suffering.  Say what you will about Lukashenko, and I do not think Belarus is a real democracy, but there is no chance that the Belarusian Guaido, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, won that election, or that the west should be able to dictate to another country who their rightful leader is.  But now this completes the picture of the attempt to turn Russia's full western border against them assisted by operatives and influence from the West (although it has not succeeded in Belarus, much like it has not succeeded in Venezuela at anything except increasing the suffering of the Venezuelan people).

So this is the picture we have, the geopolitical situation, with now discussions of Georgia (to the south) and Ukraine joining NATO against Russia simmering in the background, where Putin and Russia decide "enough" and to invade.  Putin is not a madman, and the invasion is an entirely logical attempt to recreate a neutral buffer zone outside of Russia, from where both Napoleon and Hitler invaded their country.  It is an affirmative act of aggression, it is wrong in many ways, and it causes suffering to the people in Ukraine.  The Russian system is not any better than the Western one politically; there is no reason to believe a Russia-dominated world would be better than a West-dominated one.  But it is an entirely logical move that Russia has made from their own perspective and for their own interests.  It is a sign that the we are returning to a more multipolar world, akin to the Cold War, rather than the long US-dominated hegemonic world order.  That is most likely a good thing, because it will make the exploitation of countries around the world by the United States more difficult.  The clearest and most interesting thing is that China is peacefully rising and will probably become the new preeminent superpower of the world.  While they are a largely capitalist country too, they are also assisting with the development of southern nations around the world on much better terms than those countries have ever gotten before.

It's indeed a SS symbol in the Azov insignia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2nd_SS_Panzer_Division_Das_Reich

Anyway fair point that Utkin is a nazi too lol.  He and his group are a private military contractor and not officially part of the Russian military of course but it is fair to say that there are Nazis on both sides I suppose.

Or, to make this less of a debate and more of a conversation just to learn from you and your perspective, because it's very cool to have people from all communities including Ukraine here to speak directly with, let me just ask this.  Are you bothered by Azov Battalion?  How do you feel about the integration of open Nazis into the national guard?

The official national guard account was advertising how their Nazi battalion with an SS on their uniform putting pig lard on bullets to shoot Muslims with, and calling the people "orcs."  It was deleted by twitter for violating hate speech rules!  It's insane to publicly advertise that you are racist Nazis, regardless of the brutality of Kadryov's unit.  And then this other tweet featuring a picture of a guy just sitting on a bench: why did they feature that picture except to advertise his white supremacist fascist Rhodesia patch?  Why are they screaming to the world about how big of Nazis they are?  I dunno.  I get that when there are literally invaders in your country, you might be pretty outraged, so I want to be understanding... there are horrors happening to your country and I am very sorry.  This is still actual Nazi stuff though.  Is it so widespread they can't keep it off their very own social media?  Isn't that concerning?

Putin: We are going to denazify Ukraine.
The world: they are not nazis.  You are a monster.
Ukraine: Check out this video :) It's our Nazi battalion doing Nazi things

This is general discussion, not war2 discussion or moderated discussion, and jon shouldn't be banned for having differing opinions.  And there's a lot of truth in what he's saying.  No one ever got banned from this board for supporting the invasion of iraq or the invasion of libya etc. so why now?

#1: Ukraine actually is infested with nazis.  They formally folded a literal Nazi battalion into their national guard.  They have some nazis in elected positions.  Here's a tweet from the official ukrainian national guard twitter, showing off how the nazi battalion is greasing bullets with pig lard to shoot muslim "orcs" with.  These are the types of people most invested in the ukrainian identity so they have always been the most fervently anti-russia.  They admire a nationalist militia, the organization of ukrainian nationalists, that ethnically cleansed polish people, killing tens of thousands of women and children, and they fly their flag everywhere.
The above was actually the second time in a matter of days that Ukraine twitter account publicly advertised their Nazi allegiances.  Here's one from a few days earlier, absolutely insane:

I think they are doing this deliberately to court right wing fanatics to come join the fight.  It's that or the Nazis are just so prevalent that they keep leaking into tweets accidentally.  With all apologies to Zelya and other Ukrainian players, your country is fucked up.

It is easy to get American support to attack Russia/defend Ukraine.

Russia invading Ukraine is bad.. but if U.S or China get involved, it is world war 3.
That's why they wont do it.  Russia has a nuclear stockpile, we're not gonna go shooting down their planes and start a hot war with them.  No one gives a shit what the public thinks.

if military industrial complex wants more money we'll just keep pumping and dumping advanced military equipment into the hands of whoever in ukraine still wants to fight

omg even talking covid for some reason in a thread about war.

bidens been president for over a year and covid raged during his presidency, a new variant swept the country and is now mostly receded.  That's just how it works, that's not magic.  If it were magic/fake/media-created, it would've disappeared as soon as trump left office, but it didnt.  It'll probably be back in a new variant like you reference, but the public is weary of it at this ponit and has no more stomach for further restrictions so it would seem.  so if antoher variant comes we'll do even less than we did for omicron which was already almost nothing.  just cross your fingers that the next variant is mild and not deadly or else we're in for it lol

to me this began before the eastern Ukraine breakaway regions, when the euromaidan overthrew Yanukovych.
Why now from USSR destroying? Or not from GKChP and Grobachev blocked in Crimea? Or not from Lenin and Nikolai || murdering?
Best idea I can come up with is that the goal is to obtain a peace agreement very favorably to Russia (autonomy and final peace for luhansk and donetsk, promise not to join nato & neutrality, banning Right Sector, somethnig like that).
Really? We were not in NATO and most of people didn't want to join NATO. But they came to us, occupied our territory and start a war in Donbass and later in all Ukraine. And now you tell us: give them Crimea, give them Donbass and promise not to join NATO? Are you crazy? They did this because we were not in NATO. And they will do this again and again. They tell on TV that "there is no Ukraine, this is our land".
We gave all our nuclear weapon to Russia in 1994 and they promised to defend our borders. And what we have now? Russia is fighting against Ukraine. Of course all of us want to join NATO.
I'm saying that might be Russia's goal with this invasion, I'm not making a judgment on whether it's fair to Ukrainians.  It's obviously not.  This entire struggle between east and west has been played with Ukrainian lives as the currency.
