the techniques used if u dont have a clue,everything is freeware,abandoned that i use

right now im working with wc1 stuff and the other is idk putting in wc3 2d models.
if u had a prog to set the sprites in 72 dead center in wc2's picky way would be great :p

having to do it manually mix psp/ms paint to save, cause it does not like my paint shop pro when it saves.

wc1 bnet edition :P:P:P like to do the tiles whole works but still in dream mode have to see how it plays out.

i can get team colors to everything just havent done it yet.

use this pal instead of the other one!!!

last the team splatted test war1 grunt.

nothing major so far but i do have the title pic and music :P

interesting project!
I think most of sprites could be converted automatically, just need to unpack sprites from war1.
if u had a prog to set the sprites in 72 dead center in wc2's picky way would be great :p
So, can you detail, what exactly you need? Not sure if my english is too bad or i just didn't understand what you need.

lol just playing/learning right now.

i tried wargus to try and unpack cause i read on their forums ..someone said but it didn't work for me.

i think i got a way. i'll make a grp of the war1 grunt soon.

no i got everything i need.

no your english is fine. mine sucks..

1.that file is just a image of the pal ..its better to use a unit if anyone likes coloring.

if u can rip them il doit.im using a sprite sheet and having to start over cause wrong colors mess up my rendering process also :/


2.spritesheet rip,maybe the same as a game rip idk dude had to rip them somewhere and war1 units are like 1/4th of war2's the sprite is using the darker team colors.
couple of blue+transparents to get and then trying the render and hope for best.......

using the sprite sheet would look like that. easiest way to go :P pretend we are on 286  ;D

3.rendered but has to get properly colored.

the first grp for me ..went a way lot simpler route . :) :)  rename to  "grunt.grp"  i got it in orcs, i think humans are also called grunts..

megaman tc, 8bit graphics can fly on them way simpler,ranged custom maps to change them up from war2 standard.

Yes i got peon setup like d2 he walks when you clicks and right now has a blue effect if right clicked.

Added a demo.exe haha pretty fun!

Mid 20's but I was tied down, and never did shit always worked, school, family. Hoes gonna be hoes and ruin everything because of insecurity. Now I'm half way to 30 living like I'm 20 again lol. All those things I should of been out doing when I was a young man supporting my 2 daughters. Not cool fuck my kids future up but hoes will do that shit.

still beta <----!!!!!!!

The top down only effects units but I have a solution for that we just the the units sprites when they are facing right. I'll upload and example what I mean. My gml code auto does the images for us. Yes we can totally remake war2 just need to choose a race and start adding the grahpics while I code my ass off.

which custom maps with added ships objects be more than enuff to make the additional units and whatever type of game play for them.

playing the hell out of this game in dos..the basic gameplay before u do magic is like archer/cats over the other units.....i never played this game a whole lot.

the controls are so basic that is like the standard strat.

there is no birds let the water elemental and demon come from their   buildings?

its not the pc believe it or not :o  just getting tools and cant find my old macro :( so i got to name by hand  pretty much all that is slowing me down and auto cutter tool (which is a new tool fast as hell!)
perfect for sprites got the footmen grunts archers all made like in 10 mins,
searching for my dam macro.

old version isnt freeware thats all over web it took out.

ill get there 2 units a day be like 2 weeks.

Good job, interesting to looks to your screenshots with new units, i hope you will post them during your progress.

Not sure there's 8 colors for each unit in war1 archives. Should replace colors? Also sad that there's much less units and buildings in war1 than in war2, so, have to stay that units in war2 untouched...

yeah just see how it plays when i get there just trying to get the looks for now.then open to any ideas how it wants to be balanced.
there is the raider still not complete just forced him out still has pixels and has to be centered...size adjustments.
also team color  :(  which isnt to hard just some time spent.

ill keep it updated love showing out the units.
no set thing in creating yet looking for easiest dam way lol

I'd just thought to have war2 with sprites from war1 with no gameplay changed. Replaced peon, grunt, archer, ogre (there was one in war1?), dk. Also peasant, footman, spearman, knight, w/e? Same for buildings. Same for spells and buttons.
And maybe let other units stay the same as in war2...

Anyways, that could be fun to have war1 units for war2.

Not sure how difficult is that to convert war1 grp-files to war2. But looks much more actions than just "convert.exe war1unit.grp war2unit.grp", right?

Sorry, not so much time for me for replace resources and look into war2 until it's far from finish, maybe someone else will be. I'll look to estimate that in real gameplay, but now I mainly look at your screenshots, and they looks interesting!

after a pal change and teamed colored added, 8bits are very nice to work with :) but rendering and to war2 is multi step process.

Just checked last grunt grp.

Looks perfect! Want to see more units and buildings from war1!

Just 2 notes:
1. broken corpse of that grunt. Look at that white pieces around him:

Also that white pieces during attack. Not sure that happened in war1.

2. all "grunts" are red. Need 8 colors for each unit.

Everything else: movement, attack, graphics is perfect for me!
Waiting for more interesting screenshots and grp-files. (I'll check grp much later, but nice to look at screenshots)

I also think you should automate your job as much as possible, too much work for all units, i hope you do...

team colored easily so they stay dark it can get messy if i just start squirting all over him :o

sad news i got to spend this month getting in shape  :-\  massage business has picked up  ;D i'll get there!

next tc is gonna be something easier like say starcraft alpha!

buildings are nothing and this grunt should answer ur questions il.

resizing is easy just afraid to right now.

notice the axe when he is standing sideways ..stuff like that u can only bob ross it.

hey dont be yelling at me!!! your the who needs to hustle on the exe modifications! :P

Nope that's your job i got what you need in the welcome thread here. edit File 278 rip it from dos then make ur changes add units, change spells, etc :) 

Now the hard part is you need to look carefully at each mpq file around the ai.bin location one of those files is this 278 file we extracted from dos and made our changes rename 278 after trying the tutorial to the name of file in mpq not sure need to try them.

My idea for you is to add the new graphics for ship yard, foundry, etc and replace all those units ship units and turn them all ground with map editor LOL 4 new units and 3 buildings Now if we get that file to placed correctly where it belongs we can totaly change all the units stats from spells, where there trained, now the animation settings that will help you with tweaking your sprites to give a real Total conversion feeling.

Also look for the old mods thread those are for dos if they are .exe run that patch and then extract file graphics them files with wardraft then rename and place them correctly in the mpq file. You should do this for hell, desert, etc bring those dos title sets to ru/bnet i would do it but it seems like you finding fun and this and not able to do much my time away starts tmr until i am settled in.

I will update before i pass out with some tools just run from a xp machine for compatibility of the old software you know.

for the .pal its currently a project of mine, the one dos one i keep updated is dam near instant conversion.

all war1 units are instantly in now thank god.
currently working on full automation with macros no programmer  >:(

ahh and its completed u just do a dummy grunt00a down press to 000 then it starts the down actions  ;D

currently working on getting drunk have fun modders!

Plan to continue war2 in gml. I figure I can show you how to setup the sprites and you can do it then I just emerge the projects together.

I've got a spritesheet ripper thing makes it fast and gets tje anikations right that is what I spend mpst of my time setting them back up .......but gotta make another

anyone got any ideas on the map side ...this is what im thinking.....
shipyard builds wolf dude ..barracks build arch grunt and the other magical dude "war1 has 2"

he is pretty much useless till u get the alter of storms then he is the only one to cast lust and instetad of kilrog he now has spiders!! could be pretty mean (actually can make anything here) aggravating kilrogs that attack and fly...

human side same thing ship for knights barracks for cleric or whatever.....but now the twist all orcs can be exorcised be a meaen ass little mofo also just ideas...

Edit the table files in the mpq also so you can rename some units and titles lol!! Very good hahaha also titlsets from war1? And i'm wondering how to emulate the build near road lol

problems with tiles right now!!!!! these units only like forest for now will fix later!! being beta lol

if u just knew the fun of coloring  >:( >:( >:( im using a dif black so the sprite sheet doesnt eat shadows and the trick has like gave them blue shadows on snow they still dont have the complete color to go all around just forest right now.

not hard to fix but it is the most time consuming....ive rebuild just about every unit atleast 5 times impossible with out my mac.

could just lay a grid and shore the buildings...but war1 original they debated to build anywhere also.

well fuck off with it do whatever ideas...but next project im going star alpha!! it will be way easier than this one surely to fuck! >:(

and with the one magic dude taking away a brute force power and they can be just mean as hell also.......take the new dk skeleton spell instetad of pussy ass skeletons be fire elemnts idk it can be brutal.

but whatever wanna try to stay original close as possible is good also but teh war2 cat is staying way op on war1.

hey man theres a problem in the filelist at "art\Unit\Portrait\portrait.grp"  not the correct location...using x_port now.  (i tried port.grp wasnt it)

anyhow as it is the orc land tileset, no biggie just wondering what the correct name is if anyone knows.

god the good thing /bad thing about it its gonna make me get closer to complete the .pal :/ more coloring......

its probably correct in the list filelist u posted, one im using idk where this one came from.

You should setup a OS for war2 development and use wardraft for you graphics and game editing.

Get an XP machine or VM
Download wardraft and copy war2 dos data files to then c drive or something.
Boom extract, edit, put back, or rename to appropriate name and place in bne mpq.

Custom GFX Information

 What is a GFX?

A GFX file is the file type that Warcraft II uses for all of it's images. It contains all the animations of a unit. These files are contained in MAINDAT.WAR in the DATA directory of War 2. This section will tell you to extract and edit them.

 How to make Custom GFX's

To make a Custom GFX, you first need to extract the GFX file you want to edit from MAINDAT.WAR. To do this, you will need to use WarDraft. Just open it up and extract the file you want. After that, you need to extract the pallette you want to use. For Forest terrain, extract #2, for Wasteland, extract #10, for Winter, extract #18, and for Swamp, extract #438. Make sure to save them as .RGB files. If you just want to edit a unit (meaning that it isn't specifically for a certain terrain), then it doesn't matter what pallette you use (I suggest just using #2). Now, you need to use GFXConverter (which is now built into WarDraft) to convert the GFX into a BMP file for editing. Just open the GFX and pallette files and click on "Start Conversion". This should create a BMP file and a TXT file. When it asks you if you want to create a Mask file, choose no. Now, you need to use a paint program to edit the files. I use Paint Shop Pro, because it's easy to use and works good. When editing the files, depending on the pallette you are using, certain colors are different. Unless the unit you are editing are terrain specific, then you probably don't want to use those colors. Otherwise, your unit will look wrong in other terrains. Now, save it. When you are done, open up GFXConverter again. At the top, there should be 2 tags. The first one (which should already be selected), is for converting GFX's to BMP's, the second one is for converting BMP's back into GFX's. Click on the second one and choose the BMP file and TXT file you edited. After you're done, click on "Start Conversion" and it will change it back into a GFX file. Now you're done! Look at the next section to find out how to use them in the game.

 How to Import a Custom GFX back into Warcraft II

If you want to use a Custom GFX that either you made or you downloaded, again, you need to have WarDraft. Open up MAINDAT.WAR and find the file that the GFX replaces. If you downloaded one from this page, the # that is in parenthesis is the offset(s) that the GFX is at (that's the # on the far left in WarDraft). Now, go to the right offset, and click on the "Import" button. A screen will come up asking you the location of the GFX and some other info. Put the location in the box (either by typeing it or using the Browse button). Now, click on the Box that says "Compress". Click on Import and then you're done.

 What is a GFA file?

A GFA is almost exactly the same as a GFX. GFA is file type that War2 Alpha uses for its graphics. It is only slightly different than the GFX, but you can't even tell when you're editing them. Just read about GFX's, and you will understand GFA's.

 How do I make a Custom GFA?

Making a Custom GFA is almost exactly the same as making a Custom GFX. The only difference is, that when you are in GFX Converter, to change a GFA file to a BMP, you must Choose "Alpha Standard" as the file type instead of the default "Standard". Otherwise, your bmp file will be all screwed up (it's a slightly different format than GFX's, as I said earlier). Just follow the rest of the steps for the Custom GFX, and you should be fine.

 Where can I learn some more tricks on editing GFX's?

I created a much more extensive guide in Cameron's Campaign Author's Guide. It contains some extra tips on things, and more advanced explanations than here. Go under the "Graphic Editing" section.

Dos's pals are still not correct 100% to bnet sure it can take them out but it can't put them in ..using custom sprites but I'm was dam close all buildings and later units flopped in ready to go

Got it working and staying the oil level was very low. I have no clue and no oil leak so I cleaned around the gaskets to check back later for fresh oil. Somehow it burned up I'm a week or it somewhere it should not be LOL I'll check back up.

Hey man did someone old school haxing on dos. Was able to use that old war2 hax program to make units have lust, blizzard 0 mana, train peon from farms.

I was able to set the mages to train cleric it said cleric and everything but damn Mage came out. We can also try those horse upgrades and stuff and even set the original icons that are in the mpq. Also if the upgrades work I'm sure 90% I can covert it to bnet.

remember all them extra players try in dos also!! it usually doesnt freak out like bnet.

almost done with another way of doing grp's complete sprite sheets first then all my otehr macro has to do is just rename the sprites for retro i'll put up a little art segment soon as i master it. its like not bad at all!! and takes out  the complex mouse macro.

again once the pal is complete it should be instant ...but takes manual labor setting the misrepresented colors.

looking at sprite sheets after correct size less than a minute to .grp !!!

No i would add the 3 units. Just turn the ships into ground units would be a huge group battle with war2 units and 3 units extra zealot, marine, zergling. Maybe make the shipyard a gateway or something they all spawn from. But starcraft graphics have a isometric look to them and war2 is top view but at an angle to look 3d you can tell by the shadows :/ maybe I can find a custom building or just go with the flow.

what im seeing is war2 is 5x5=25 walking sprites, war1 has 30 sc1 has 63! i used just the 5 that coresponds with war2. war2 is iso also its not top down all the way. yeah but shit on the shadows lol they can be where ever.

but putting them with war2 units and making them close to thier sc1 selves a zealot is gonna kick the hell out of a lusted org. just try for a prequel version of sc1

Got him looking decent I edited the x_battleshp.grp to a marine with only 15 frames :( now when I get back I will edit the battleshp.grp the correct one and hopefully have enough frames for the shooting animation. I will upload pics soon got a few errands to run.

afraid the ship grps are not gonna be enough sprites for them. im still working on swamp tiles set cause u cant have icons in forest . just think of terren wars! guns (burrta burrta ratatatat) tanks types for the ships!!! goliaths battle cruisers whatever science vessel as the mage.

cool! catapilts ships grp doesnt have as many sprites. units that require walking will suck on them.

Custom GFX Information

 What is a GFX?

A GFX file is the file type that Warcraft II uses for all of it's images. It contains all the animations of a unit. These files are contained in MAINDAT.WAR in the DATA directory of War 2. This section will tell you to extract and edit them.

 How to make Custom GFX's

To make a Custom GFX, you first need to extract the GFX file you want to edit from MAINDAT.WAR. To do this, you will need to use WarDraft. Just open it up and extract the file you want. After that, you need to extract the pallette you want to use. For Forest terrain, extract #2, for Wasteland, extract #10, for Winter, extract #18, and for Swamp, extract #438. Make sure to save them as .RGB files. If you just want to edit a unit (meaning that it isn't specifically for a certain terrain), then it doesn't matter what pallette you use (I suggest just using #2). Now, you need to use GFXConverter (which is now built into WarDraft) to convert the GFX into a BMP file for editing. Just open the GFX and pallette files and click on "Start Conversion". This should create a BMP file and a TXT file. When it asks you if you want to create a Mask file, choose no. Now, you need to use a paint program to edit the files. I use Paint Shop Pro, because it's easy to use and works good. When editing the files, depending on the pallette you are using, certain colors are different. Unless the unit you are editing are terrain specific, then you probably don't want to use those colors. Otherwise, your unit will look wrong in other terrains. Now, save it. When you are done, open up GFXConverter again. At the top, there should be 2 tags. The first one (which should already be selected), is for converting GFX's to BMP's, the second one is for converting BMP's back into GFX's. Click on the second one and choose the BMP file and TXT file you edited. After you're done, click on "Start Conversion" and it will change it back into a GFX file. Now you're done! Look at the next section to find out how to use them in the game.

 How to Import a Custom GFX back into Warcraft II

If you want to use a Custom GFX that either you made or you downloaded, again, you need to have WarDraft. Open up MAINDAT.WAR and find the file that the GFX replaces. If you downloaded one from this page, the # that is in parenthesis is the offset(s) that the GFX is at (that's the # on the far left in WarDraft). Now, go to the right offset, and click on the "Import" button. A screen will come up asking you the location of the GFX and some other info. Put the location in the box (either by typeing it or using the Browse button). Now, click on the Box that says "Compress". Click on Import and then you're done.

 What is a GFA file?

A GFA is almost exactly the same as a GFX. GFA is file type that War2 Alpha uses for its graphics. It is only slightly different than the GFX, but you can't even tell when you're editing them. Just read about GFX's, and you will understand GFA's.

 How do I make a Custom GFA?

Making a Custom GFA is almost exactly the same as making a Custom GFX. The only difference is, that when you are in GFX Converter, to change a GFA file to a BMP, you must Choose "Alpha Standard" as the file type instead of the default "Standard". Otherwise, your bmp file will be all screwed up (it's a slightly different format than GFX's, as I said earlier). Just follow the rest of the steps for the Custom GFX, and you should be fine.

 Where can I learn some more tricks on editing GFX's?

I created a much more extensive guide in Cameron's Campaign Author's Guide. It contains some extra tips on things, and more advanced explanations than here. Go under the "Graphic Editing" section.

Use this to make the .grps even says where to get the correct .pal if you need them. Also for frames, etc we can modify thay also. This is all in the welcome thread also look up the file 278 in there to.

slowly getting the swamp, i can handle just one tile set im still a big noob in dos.testing out gimp.

im just gonna have to go back to my forest custom pal and update it some reason i had most of the colors working and i cannot doit again. it just wasnt doing the basic green orcs hydra droped right in with only a few pixels  wrong from the sprite sheet and team colors can still be added.

looks the best on orc swamp where im staying.
setup is starting to work great! just odd stuff for making the death sprites get in and some team color adding, but not to the pal grunts are so dark...

ill put the way i do sprite sheets to grp on here when i get my macro all finished...and it also just a plain keyboard covers it all

well shit on it ill teach the .pal gone to drink it needs alot of other units to test it out.

and successssssssssssssssssssss hydra is the same as the sprite sheet with now incuded attacks still working on the death animations to be automated


rename as grunt as it uses there 49 sprites peon orge use 5 more advance death animations.
no team colors was added sprite sheet test.

wasteland or swamp only

that is the current pal ...to users that ever venture u prep the sprite sheet to all black in bmp format add the .pal (old 1997 psp)then load in (asu) then use whatever means to 72x72 the box size (gamemaker7) and macro u auto program cant release mine yet not finished.

so need a vm studio of this.

dont worry il soon as the death animations ill get all war1 sprites.

Tileset - Obvious concrete blocks, street, etc.

Sprites - units,icons, buildings, 2 cars possible lol.

Sounds - Gun fire, walking, yelling, explosions, screaming.

So with game play and sprites i think each unit to be trained is a different character with a different weapon best way to go with that. We can change goldmines to stores to steal from and put like 1500 gold or whatever.. put several mines around the map. Use upgrade glitch to make collecting money valuable, cars that explode on map side suicide bomber, turn lumber into weed LOOOL currency to get a farm and make a gang lol, tons of cool stuff

How confident are you in graphics? I say lets get it done.

Yes tons of house just example of what we need. I was thinking make orc transport a cop car or something like that. We will figure tiles out not that complicated just a Timely process to reverse what file is what right now. My first attempt failed but I'm sure I replaced the wrong forest tile files or wrong extention....

Find a better house if you want feel free it's gonna be hard keeping our sprites in the same type of design. But I'm sure we can make it happen.

It's begun lol
Get an xp system and wardraft with warcraft 3 does data files. You can then open them edit save files should get 3 of them try without decompression. Now we need to figure the file type in the mpq for the tileset we changed and rename the files we got with wardraft then replace them in the mpq with the right extension.

I tried to matching similar extentions and using files sizes but it failed for me maybe I was incorrect or editing changes the files size and now my comparing logic is broken. Give it a try if you fail let me know I did but plunty to try.
