I once saw a forum like that.  Would be kinda cool, I don't know if this forum can do it, but I remember setting high scores in a bunch of them... shit I forget what they were.  Like Snake or something?  Tetris?  Hmm I'm forgetting which game I monopolized the score list on.

One of my old clan forums on an mmo had an arcade like that, we had games like tetris, pacman snake, I think we may have had frogger too. not 100% sure on that one, there were a bunch of other games that i can't really remember too. It would be interesting to have an arcade section here on the forums so we can have a highscores between the server people only, I say implement if possible.

Got the file for SMF 2.0.9 but didn't see any description/screenshots of this thing? Can you link that if you have it handy?

Also, looks like there are "GamePacks (http://www.docskillz.com/docs/index.php?action=downloads;cat=2)" that come separately that have the actual games. You guys talk amongst yourselves and figure out which you want and we can test it out.
Title: Re: forum games
Post by: iL on March 17, 2015, 06:34:35 AM
If you offer to add games as a separate blocks with swf content embedded to site or forum, that can be gone easily.
The main question is design. Where do you plan to put that block?
Mousey, that's a question to you i think.

I also can unpack it here for example: http://forum.war2.ru/games/ (http://forum.war2.ru/games/)
You can click to any swf file you want to play, but i think we should do that more beautiful.

Is that what the SMF Arcade mod does, creates a skin for integrating the games into the forum?
Title: Re: forum games
Post by: iL on March 17, 2015, 09:10:44 AM
not sure how it works with SMF Arcade mod, i think our custom implementation could be better as applied to our invididual design.
What we need to embed swf is several lines of simple html code. Question is where we should embed it.

I think the way it works is it adds a "Games" link at the top of the forum, and then you click that link and it takes you to a menu of available Flash games (what's available is probably based on what game packs you install).  The fun part of these in theory is that it will save and display the top ten scores or whatever for each game so members of the forum can compete against each other's scores.

They're here: http://www.docskillz.com/docs/index.php?action=downloads;cat=2 (http://www.docskillz.com/docs/index.php?action=downloads;cat=2) Go ahead and pick any out you want. (You can pick individual games from packs.) I also read somewhere on that forum that a bunch of other game formats are compatible, like phpbb etc.

I like the idea of having mostly worthwhile games and not having a bunch of shitty garbage games distracting people and hiding the good ones!

Gamepack 12: Donkey Kong
Gamepack 14: Frogger
Gamepack 15: Pacman
Gamepack 16: Snake, Tetris
Gamepack 13: Asteroids, Breakout

Of the games we have I only tried Avoider and it was really basic but okay, Duck Hunt might be okay, all the rest look like hot garbage.

That ping pong game is crazy.  Like most of the time the ball bounces as you expect, but sometimes it just makes no sense.  The physics are weird.  Usually that happens when it hits near the bottom of one side, it either doesn't bounce as far over as it should or it just shoots way over for no reason.

Well, Avoider is a good game, but getting a great score usually means a piece gets stuck for awhile (it always unsticks eventually).  I had the rectangle stuck from like 3k until 8k.

Because it's not there.  I made a post about certain games and which game packs they're in, so that Mousetopher can add them.

I recommend taking out all existing games except Avoider and PingPong.  We should only leave the good games to compete in, we don't want people setting records in idiot games.

yes duck hunt is pointless.  which is too bad because it's like a perfect port of duck hunt otherwise, but it just goes forever... stupid.  i thought it would end after 10 rounds, then i thought maybe 12, 15?  then i thought 20.  on level 21 i quit

That's Tetris 2, I found it in another gamepack. There's another one that's just "Tetris" that was missing from pack 15 or 16. You can mute the sound, these are the controls:

Title: Re: forum games
Post by: SmurfKinG on March 19, 2015, 06:44:39 PM
that pingpong has horrid physics, its more a matter of luck than actual dexterity lol

and avoider is bugged.

sometimes the blocks get stuck in a loop on a corner or in one of the sides just bouncing up and down but no left and right.

i actually just got champ cuz of that bug cuz all 3 blocks were "stuck" in the corners .. i literally just stood my cursor in the middle watching score go up for the last 4000points or so lol

and tetris... no soft fall and that thing showing where the piece gonna fall is lame and actually causes me more confusioin than actual aid.

breakout, it appears its cut down from the right side or something

its good we're trying these games but we ought to find some other versions that are less buggy or arent 1same level repeating itself over n over

a lot of them you have to click "submit score" when you're done.  Others you can just start over if you're playing badly.  With pingpong you lose suddenly and the score is submitted at the same time.  It's why i have like 100 ping pong scores on the board from drunk playing on wednesday night.

I think Nblox is the exact same thing as Tetris except it doens't submit your score at the end.

has a crapload of games... i wouldnt want all those.  best to keep it to quality entries instead of just installing 50,000 games.  but some interesting things to scroll through there

I like the idea, it's a great way to keep some peoples on forum, but since the only 2 decent games have bugs i dont see anymore reason for me to play this arcade.

i registed to that site cuz it wasnt allowing me to play it

upon registration i noticed its a site for mental disorder persons lol wtf, (like literally u had to choose what mental disorder u choose from from a list of like 100 disorders...)

, after registration i still cant play the game, says administrator has disabled playing users from my usergroup

anyway, i did a quick 10min  search on the internet only the find buggy ass mspac clones everywhere,

ill check later if i can find the original arcade 1980. :P

I don't know if we can use the one you linked. Afaik it can't just be any downloadable version, it has to be specifically compatible with forum arcades so the scores will get submitted. Any flash game (.swf) should work, but if it isn't modded for forum arcades then it won't send the score (e.g. nblox). On the plus side SMF arcade will support games that are designed for other forum software like phpbb and vbulletin. You may have better luck finding compatible games if you search specifically for forum/forum arcade games.

If you can find a copy I'll install it. You can check the gamepacks on docskillz.com, and there's also a thread on there linking to other sites where games can be downloaded. (However, docskillz guy specifically said some of them can be installed & played but don't support score sending.)

mhm. If you can view the source of the page and isolate the .swf file then should be able to download it with FF or Chrome and use that.

~`~` GaMe ReVieWs `~`~

Five star games
tetris: solid tetris game
pacman: good pacman game

Four star games
None

Three star games
pingpong: the ball physics are bad sometimes but the game is ok.  i think curveball is superior but theres room for both games
donkey kong: same level over and over... a bit repetitive but it works
asteroids??   havent played it much, just enough to find ghost bullets appearing but otherwise seems ok

Two star games
avoider: simple concept but fun, except it's brkoen.  it bugs and pieces get stuck, which allows for scores that cant be beat otherwise.  if it werent for that it'd be cool
frogger2: not a great frogger game
breakout: pretty bare bones version, kind of crappy. had it as a three star game but realized it belongs with frogger2.

One star games
duckhunt... it's a great port of the game but it just goes on forever.  no point wasting your time trying to set a score if it's just a matter of wasting time the longest
frogger... a worse frogger game than frogger2
tetris2... okay, but an inferior version of tetris
nblox... basically same as tetris but doesnt submit scores

i hgavent played (not much interest):
billiards
simon
solitaire
target shoot
mumu
rsnake
are any of these any good?

rsnake is decent

why snake if we have a more challenging version of snake :P

though i might say if one of the dots appear in a corner (almost touching it) it becomes impossible to grab it.

that square should have round corners

Okay, so if I install a game designed for another arcade software I have to manually select WHICH software it is in the settings for that game. Got Snake to work with the IPB Arcade setting, but no luck with the other two. It looks like the forum you snagged them from is vbulletin? Do they successfully submit the scores on there? Can you look and see if there's a version number for the arcade?

That's where I got Snake and Curveball as you can tell and yes it has high scores for both.

Well, set Curveball to the IPB arcade setting but it's doing nothing. It doesn't even seem to try sending the score after the game ends, just sits there.

is it just me or does snake game constantly not pick up my commands.  i hit, say, down arrow and then right  arrow back to back, and right arrow never pushes.  but my finger is literally holding down the button still as i hit a wall.

yeah that snake keyb cmd  response is lacking

it's like it doesn't register fast consecutive keystrokes.

for instance,,, if you hit left and immediately up, it doesn't recognize the up.

so you have to always guess a manual delay between keystrokes... its badddd.... next snake game plz lol

i went to control panel keyb and increase keyb repeat rate and speed but didn't help a bit

the thing with it is, for me, it works like 75% of the time to do a real quick double move, but then the other times it doesn't so it screws me over

The main i dislike with tetris is wrong rotation side. I always played with different rotation side.
Why didn't they make it make it selectable?

cool puzzle game but it appears no scores..
Yes, nice game, tried it also
