General Discussion / Re: ATTN Russians
« on: March 01, 2022, 09:00:03 AM »
^^ See, to me this began before the eastern Ukraine breakaway regions, when the euromaidan overthrew Yanukovych.  But the above post demonstrates the problem with this invasion imo.  Like, not only is there the violence and destruction that war begets, but what exactly is the plan?  will people whose country was just invaded be content to allow a new pro-Russian government?  How will it be upheld without an occupation?  Without more violence?

Best idea I can come up with is that the goal is to obtain a peace agreement very favorably to Russia (autonomy and final peace for luhansk and donetsk, promise not to join nato & neutrality, banning Right Sector, somethnig like that).

US elected a black president, guess there must be no racism in the US

#1: Ukraine actually is infested with nazis.  They formally folded a literal Nazi battalion into their national guard.  They have some nazis in elected positions.  Here's a tweet from the official ukrainian national guard twitter, showing off how the nazi battalion is greasing bullets with pig lard to shoot muslim "orcs" with. Invalid Tweet ID
These are the types of people most invested in the ukrainian identity so they have always been the most fervently anti-russia.  They admire a nationalist militia, the organization of ukrainian nationalists, that ethnically cleansed polish people, killing tens of thousands of women and children, and they fly their flag everywhere.

Europe is who’s really going to get the squeeze here. Russian gas pipelines being shut down making them more reliant on more expensive gas from the US. Pulled deeper into a US-centric economic orbit.  China and even Brazil staying neutral means an alternative market to compete with the US-centric economy that is sanctioning half the world

I think there is going to be a nuclear war. The whole world is turning against Putin and he will feel like he was tricked. Like they set a trap not him. He will be furious.

The only thing that will stop Putin is either the people closest to him if they dare defy him, or the people of Russia. The civilians.

Prayers for the people of Russia
Lol, no one is intervening here, so Russia will most likely successfully oust the sitting ukrainian government in the coming days.  What makes the nukes start flying in this, the most likely scenario?

The west was already opposing and sanctioning Russia all the time, but Russia still has their partnership with China and the rest of the developing world.  They gave up trying to work with the west here, clearly, but have another path before them.

you think russians all hate this war?  Did americans all hate the illegal war on iraq when we invaded?  nationalism allows for a lot of nonsense in the name of the nation

This is general discussion, not war2 discussion or moderated discussion, and jon shouldn't be banned for having differing opinions.  And there's a lot of truth in what he's saying.  No one ever got banned from this board for supporting the invasion of iraq or the invasion of libya etc. so why now?

#2: There was a more russian leaning elected leader in ukraine that got overthrown with support from the west after he tried to enter into a russian trade deal.  Ever since then, russian-leaning parts of eastern ukraine have been broken away and have been trying to claim autonomy.  Ukrainian militias have been shelling them constantly including increasing the shelling in the run up to this war.  This is covered widely on Russian TV.

#3: NATO, the anti-russian military alliance, has been encroaching more and more into eastern territory.  Russians see this is a major threat to their security.  Baltic states were already admitted, when Russia was too weak to stop it, but now there was talk of bringing in Ukraine.  This was clearly a red line with Russia and in the run-up to the invasion, when the US was trumpeting more and more that Russia was going to attack, i never saw anyone promise not to bring Ukraine into Nato.

Clearly russia determined that they were tired of the walls pushing in on them, tired of being shoved around, and that it was time for decisive action.  Russia is a nuclear power and former superpower that has now had the west playing games in its backyard for years and wanted to reassert itself, maybe even seeing this as a moment that would escape from them if they waited around and didn't act decisively. There is a cold but rational logic to it if they want to maximize their position in the world, as most countries do.  I have to think there were alternatives to invasion, and all sorts of ordinary working people suffer during war, but in the long lead up maybe putin finally determined nobody was willing to concede anything if he did not act.

Oh, forgot to mention so ill add here, let's not also forget the recent "color revolution" attempt the west did to belarus 2020, taking aim at another russian border state.  insane

I mean ever since a democratically elected leader got deposed by euro-loving kiev residents and meddling US ambassadors -- for the crime of trying to take a superior russian trade deal instead of onerous imf loans mind you -- things have been going down a bad track.  the recent talk of joining NATO was clearly a red line.  but that doesn't mean the war owns or that lots of innocent peolpes lives arent being upended.  It's naive to think there is nothing worth picking up arms for, but at the same time it's also always best to avoid violence and upheaval where possible.

hope all is well with Russia, Ukraine, and Sounds like many are fleeing to Pioland.

Agree war is senseless and horrible. no fucking reason for it.. would be so much better to work together to solve problems together for the greater good of humanity than it is to argue and destroy eachother. Everyone wins. Let everyone win. tf
Unfortunately ukraine was being torn between the east and west so that there was no way everyone could win.  im surprised russia actually invaded and dont really care about the guys being thrown out of power in ukraine but it's not good for ordinary Folkses.

ive gotta admit i didnt think russia would actually do it, figured all the media talk was just scaremongering.  i guess nato refusnig to disavow ukrainian membership while ukraine banned the russian language and its militias kept on shelling of luhnask and donetsk, combined with russian willingness for war, finally was enough.  we'll see where it goes from here.  funny it all started from protests with less than 50% support that demanded the rejection of a better trade deal with russia in favor of cozying up to western europe.  ukrainian nazis and EU lovers have really seen their country down the tubes.

i mean even boring normies have facebook and get this stuff.  the riot at the capitol building ands so on are only gaining accpetance on the right, because breaking ranks on any of it would show a lack of commitment and would not be received well, so they can only dial it up, not down

I mean you would agree the same could be said of left as far as extremism goes?  Like no cash bails for repeat felons, defund the police movement, CRT/gender studies for children.

Sounds like both sides have gone off the deep end like Gavin Newson, Rachel Maddow, Don Lemon, etc.
When someone says “we should have safe streets” and arrest repeat criminals even if their petty crimes. The lefts response sounds more like “we need to address the root problems and learn to live with this until we do.”

Could go on for awhile but the divide is great in America. Also in my experience people with more leftist ideology seem more unwilling to budge their views.
Imo the most important things to understand with any of your points here are a) the stances of the Democratic Party and most of its elected politicians are far removed from the demands of its activist base, and b) a lot of what you mention here are classic boogeymen conjured up by political operatives on the right.

For example, on anything crime related the right is always going to try scare the public as much as possible (it works), but also the Dems are going to completely run from whatever the activist demand may be, even if it's good, as they don't want to be tarred as soft on crime.  Therefore, imo, most of the things you mention are both good and not even being supported by the Democrats anyway.  In rare cases where an activist-minded person actually wins their election (ie Chesa Boudin) they are not representative of the Democrats, and are in fact disowned by the Party which will attempt to recall them or replace them.

As it concerns Boudin and the issue of bail, the purpose of bail is ostensibly to prevent people from skipping their trial, with the bail money acting as leverage.  That's all it's for.  If someone is deemed a threat to the community, they should be held without bail in the first place.  The problem of cash bail is obvious... It means, in many cases, rich people can get out on bail while poor people cannot.  As always in this country, it's a system that benefits the wealthy at the expense of the working poor and people of color, and if anything goes wrong with someone out pre-trial, it will be seized on for endless political attacks, a la Willie Horton going all the way back to the 80s.

Another thing that is both good and not supported by the Dems is the defund movement.  The Democratic Party never endorsed "defund" and have been running away from it since it broke out as a slogan of the BLM protests.  They angrily attack it and blame it for their useless asses losing elections, and I can pull plenty of quotes if you need to see them.  I actually think it's a reasonable demand for reform.  Police salaries are absurd and forces are becoming increasingly militarized, receiving so much money they buy all kinds of fancy new tech toys for themselves.  The NYPD gets $11 billion dollars a year.  The Chicago Police budget is literally 37% of all city spending.  There are a lot of 911 etc calls that alternative non-police offices could be responding to, and a lot of that money could be spent on social programs and education to help prevent crime at the source.  Police budgets have done nothing but grow for decades, just like the US military budgets.  Should they keep growing forever?

and so on.  "CRT" is a great example of a boogeyman conjured up by Republicans.  No one had ever heard of anything called "Critical Race Theory" before the campaign against it, but it sure does make teaching the actual history of America sound elitist and scary.  Keep in mind also that no matter who we're talking about or what they're doing, there needs to be an attack from the other side against them.  Even centrist losers like Nancy Pelosi or Gavin Newsome can and will be painted as radical because what else are you going to say, that they're reasonable centrists?  This means someone who is attempting to be even-minded is always going to think "well the fringes of both sides are out of control!" because each party is always going to need attacks against the other, regardless of the reality.  The Democrats themselves also like to pose as being more on the left than they really are, because they want to stay in good favor with the base.

Rachel Maddow is useless corporate TV trash.

Burnt, I muted you when you were posting about people burning Van's farm and stealing your neighbor's dog or whatever.  You seemed like you were in a crisis and I thought this board was hurting you, so I was trying to do what was best.  Just forgive and put it in the past man, I'm happy to have a good relationship with you going forward despite all your attacks on me.  Even Lance and Tupac who have seen the code don't think I took Lance's ladder.  They don't attack me for that, they just say it's shitty code. :P

As far as the other stuff in your post, I couldn't care less about Biden, and for the vaccines, just pick any county reporting the data, and you'll see covid is much worse for those unvaccinated.  Here's a random example: https://kingcounty.gov/depts/health/covid-19/data/vaccination-outcomes.aspx

just a made up estimate, it's definitely the mainstream of the right though.  in the rightwing media ecosystem, all the twitter pundits, tucker, desantis etc, this kind of talk is constant.  37% of american adults are unvaccinated, trump got 47% of the vote, those don't completely overlap but there's definitely a connection.  tk is in the mainstream, hes just drinking more deeply from the koolaid chalice and getting more wound up than some others might but it trickles down to everyone.  i mean even boring normies have facebook and get this stuff.  the riot at the capitol building ands so on are only gaining accpetance on the right, because breaking ranks on any of it would show a lack of commitment and would not be received well, so they can only dial it up, not down
