What's everyone having for lunch?
-
I'm having yellow dal I made over the weekend with some brown rice. I made it extra spicy! Healthy living! I had Chick Fil-A yesterday lol. Mmmm
-
Lunch, eh? Don't mind if I do. *chuckles* Yeah, I've got some leftover spaghetti topped with veggie chili and beans.

my lunch is always a jar of mayonnaise washed down with a bottle of pepsi

I think white rice is better and I've read things saying its not really that much less healthy than brown rice actually, but I eat brown rice anyway because it makes me feel healthier. It never comes out as fluffy and soft as white rice for me, I dunno how they do it at places like Chipotle because it tastes the same as the white rice there as far as I can tell.
-
brown rice is generally more nutritious because they keep the entire wheat kernel intact (germ, endosperm, and bran) as opposed to refined grain of white rice that only contains the endosperm.
-
Yeah I know but I read some stuff about how its not really that big a deal. I'm not a scientist or anything though so I mostly eat brown to be safe. It definitely has more fiber so.
-
i'll eat white rice but fuck white bread
-
If by white bread you mean like a loaf at the grocery store then yeah but if you mean like a good baguette or loaf of italian bread or something you're nuts.
-
Or if you just mean not eat a bunch of white bread every day then yeah obviously.
-
yea I definitely had crap like Wonder Bread in my mind when I said that.
-
Oh okay, yeah that's gross. Whole grains for weekly staples like morning toast for this foodie gamer.
-
Good question, Cuban sub probably. [emoji14]

I really wish there was a Cuban place near me. There's a random ass bar near where I live that for inexplicably has a great Cuban sandwich though, which is weird because usually when I get them outside of a Cuban place they're garbo.

One of my great improvised dinners of all time was a few years ago after Easter when my spouse's parents gave us a bunch of leftover ham, and I had made carnitas the Saturday before Easter. I was driving home thinking of what to have for dinner and thought "holy shit" and got nice bread and pickles and made Cubans by pressing the fuck out of them in the pan with something real heavy (I forget) wrapped in foil. It was incredibly epic, and that's my story!

I don't really shop there enough to compare prices tbh because there isn't one close to my house or my work so I rarely go. When I do go I enjoy their prepared foods section, however.

I like Trader Joes but they have the same problem except there's one a little closer than Whole Foods so if we go out to eat or something near there and need some stuff sometimes we'll shop there. The really cheap beer and wine they have is epic win but I can never get it myself because of fail PA liquor laws. Shit!! Piss!!! Ass!!!!!

I'm going to take a walk outside and see where I end up, for lunch, today.

Please report back! This kind of exciting cliffhanger content is exactly what the lunch thread needs.
-
Popped into a place called Pizza Authentica I'd never been to before. Got a grilled veggie sandwich with pesto. It was pretty shitty because the place is crappy, I guess. It could have been a good sandwich at a better venue.
-
Sorry to hear about your sandwich, but thanks for reporting back! Hopefully your next lunch outing will be better!

these are pretty good to me blid.
cooking on skillet/george forman use some olive oil etc they tend to dry out.
microwave seems ok.

u can get them at walmart 3$-4$ for 8 burgers
-
I might have a Foreman grill somewhere. Wouldn't mind burgin' it some time soon.
-
If you're vegetarian you should just make real veg food instead of fake meat, IMO.
-
not veg but losing weight and finding alternatives.
grillers choice is the only one that taste like a hamburger the others have other taste.
and heck yeah id love to try to make some veg alternatives.
i do have my own garden but the tomatos is all that did well and using them as the patty gets old lol even though good.

This dal is what I've been eating this week: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/06/and-then-i-moved-into-the-refrigerator/ (http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2007/06/and-then-i-moved-into-the-refrigerator/) It's real good I make it spicier though.

In the case of a lot of fake burgs, they are made out of vegetables. Or sometimes there's ones made from fungus or mushrooms.
It's true the ones easycompany posted are just made from soy, but I also hear it's really good to consume tons of soy so as to get your estrogen up.

The black eyed peas on that page are a separate recipe, I made the dal.
-
Hmm, what's for lunch today?
Balsamic Marinated Portobello Mushrooms, Lemon Basil Goat Cheese, Roasted Red Peppers, Arugula
Chickpea Fritters, Cucumber, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion, Pepperoncini, Lemon Mint Tahini Dressing
Greek Feta, Heirloom Tomatoes, Basil, Pesto, Balsamic Glaze
-
The chickpea fritters sound the most win of those choices. I am having the dal again today, and maybe again tomorrow if I have enough left. Healthy week here. I have to figure out something for dinner though, because we ate all the pork chops and wings I grilled!!!
-
Now that I think about it, what is even the difference between "chickpea fritters" and falafel.
-
They look slightly different on GIS but I figure they're basically the same thing.
I would have gone with the Greek feta meal but I already had a pesto sandwich yesterday when I ate the bad one, so I think I'll pick out something different for today.
I may go with the mushrooms, because the falafel sandwich is putting on airs and denying being a falafel.

Yea but not often and when I do its usually raw goat milk. I get it from a farmer that comes to toronto every saturday and sells it. Top quality stuff. Maybe I will pick some up this weekend. The difference between this and what is classified as milk in the store, is night and day.

Yup, not pasteurized or homogenized. This keeps all the enzymes intact and doesn't kill all the beneficial probiotics found in raw milk. Pasteurization also denatures proteins, and destroys some of the vitamins as well.

I don't know what statement I made that you're attempting to argue with, but even this complete non-sequitur is false to disingenuous. From the page you linked:
During 1993–2006, 121 outbreaks reported to CDC were caused by dairy products where the investigators could determine if the dairy product was pasteurized or unpasteurized (raw). These outbreaks included 4,413 illnesses, 239 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths.
So, you lied, it was 3, not 2, and then thousands more people got sick from it across over a hundred outbreaks, so you were being dishonest by excluding this information in your attempt to downplay the dangers of nonpasteurized dairy products.

millions of people get sick from cooked food as well.
If you consider the number of outbreaks caused by raw milk in light of the very small amount of milk that is consumed raw, the risk of outbreaks caused by raw milk is at least 150 times greater than the risk of outbreaks caused by pasteurized milk.
-
The hospitalization rate for patients in outbreaks caused by raw milk was 13 times higher (13% vs. 1%) than the rate for people in outbreaks caused by pasteurized milk.
This difference is probably partly because the outbreaks caused by raw milk were all caused by bacterial infections that tend to be more severe. For example, E. coli O157:H7, a bacterium that can cause kidney failure and death, was a common cause of outbreaks due to raw milk. For outbreaks caused by pasteurized milk, relatively mild viral infections and foodborne toxins were more common causes.
-

Chicago-style "pizza" is the most controversial pizza in America, and from the sound of it fuckboi1488 is unwittingly about to walk into that controversy head on.
If you go through with this, it'll be like stepping out onto a highway with a truck bearing down on you at 80mph.
-
Let's clear up a thing or two here: I have had deep dish pizza before, but not the "Chicago" style, which is more like a casserole kind of thing than just a pizza with a thicker crust like you get at a lot of pizza places when you order deep dish. I have always had and enjoyed the more traditional New York style, being a lifetime East Coast resident, and I highly doubt the Chicago style will stand up to it, and am not sure if it is even truly "pizza." However, I have never had it before, and it looks somewhat tasty for what it is, so I am curious to try it.
I would rather try it from a more respectable place than a national chain like Uno, but sadly I am not aware of anywhere else to try one in my area.
-
Think I'll skip lunch today, or maybe grab just a bagel.
No idea how people who don't abuse amphetamines do this.
Edit: Bagel can be an acceptable lunch or lunch time snack replacement, depending on size and timing of other meals, how hard one is working, etc.
-
Haha I've been to Uno's before, and if you've had deep dish pizza before it's not going to be anything different than that.
-
Really? I thought they did the Chicago thing where they put the toppings on the bottom and put the sauce on the top. This is very disturbing.
-
Hm. It seems they do do that. Maybe it just doesn't taste that different? Whatever, I think we're committed now. We went to Buffalo Wild Wings a couple weeks ago, and I go to the Wendy's and Moe's Southwest Grill regularly, so this is the last shitty chain in this shopping center by the highway exit I haven't been to.

Hm. It seems they do do that. Maybe it just doesn't taste that different?
Yeah that really doesn't make any difference.
Maybe it would if you had a whole bunch of stuff in it? I've just had cheese pizzas from Uno or at most pepperoni a long time ago.

I plan to ask the server to recommend the classic Chicago style pie.

I'm a vegetarian and even I've tried it multiple times.

The last bad pizza I had was from Pizza Hut. Pizza Hut thin crust supreme used to be my favorite when I was a kid and I hadn't had it in years and a Pizza Hut opened down the road so I tried one. It was like eating a big greasy floppy pile of salt.

That is one part of the argument. I drink it for the health benefits, I don't care if there is a 0.00001% chance I will get an upset stomach from it.

Can't wait to see what refreshing brews they have on tap at Uno. We're also going to see The Gift afterwards, which I have heard is good!
-
nice have fun, drive careful.

Have to say we were pleasantly surprised by Uno. For a national chain the food was surprisingly palatable, and I enjoyed the pizza. Definitely in the Chili's circa early-mid 2000's tier casual dining chain. Even better, the local one is near the movie theater, and we were able to buy discounted tickets there! And The Gift was quite good as well. An enjoyable night out!
Off to a bad start this morning...had no coffee in the house so went to McDonald's for coffee and couldn't resist picking up a sausage biscuit and hash brown. Delicious though!

Ruth's Chris is a price level above Chili's type places and in its own category. I've never been there or similar places because if I'm going to spend $40 on a steak (which I almost never do anyway) I'd rather not do so at a chain.

Bitch I'm about to go get a Sausage Egg McMuffin right now!!!
When it comes to breakfast, the most appealing morning meals are usually the ones you can grab and gobble on the way to work. Sure, scrambling a few egg whites doesn't take long, but it's so much easier to swing by the drive-thru under the golden arches. According to one 2010 survey, one in five Americans choose to start their day at McDonald's.
An Egg McMuffin, a classic breakfast item that's been on Mc-menu since 1975, may seem like a healthy choice with its five simple ingredients, including those protein-rich eggs that promise to fuel you in the a.m., but truth be told, you can find close to 50 ingredients in just one item that makes up this sneaky sandwich. Read on to find out what eggs-actly you're biting into.
THE SUSPECT: McDonald's Egg McMuffin
THE DETECTIVES: Mira and Jayson Calton, Ph.D., a husband-and-wife team whose latest book "Rich Food, Poor Food," the sequel to their bestselling book "Naked Calories," hits bookstores in February.
NUTRITION LABEL: 300 calories, 12g fat, 30g carbs, 18g protein, 780mg sodium.
LISTED INGREDIENTS: English muffin, egg, pasteurized process American cheese, Canadian style bacon, liquid margarine.
UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
1. ENGLISH MUFFIN: Carbs aren’t always the enemy, but in this case, they really are. This muffin may contain up to eight genetically-modified ingredients: enriched flour, high-fructose corn syrup, yellow corn flour, corn meal, citric acid, soy lecithin, soybean oil and/or canola oil. That's in addition to water, yeast, and two percent or less of the following: salt, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, rice flour, barley malt, artificial/natural flavors, dough conditioners, calcium propionate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), and (more) soy lecithin. Among these, the worst offenders may be:
a) Unbleached wheat flour. Wheat as our grandparents knew it—the four-feet-tall “amber waves of grain”— isn’t the same. For the past 40 years, farmers have been manipulating the gene to grow a crop of two-feet-tall dwarfed wheat that contains gliaden protein, which produces a morphine-like compound that binds to brain receptors and triggers overeating up to 400 extra calories a day! Gliaden has also been linked to inflammatory issues from irritable bowel to heart disease. That's not all: There's also wheat gluten, which may cause digestive problems, headaches, brain fog, fatigue, and other symptoms, and amylopectin A, which is responsible for “wheat belly” (you know, the new “muffin top”).
b) Azodicarbonamide. This hard-to-pronounce ingredient (first sign it's bad news!) has been banned in Australia, the UK, and in most European countries. In Singapore you can get up to 15 years in prison and penalized nearly half a million dollars in fines for using this chemical as an ingredient. But in the U.S., this asthma-causing allergen is totally legal and often used in foamed plastics, like yoga mats and sneaker soles, as well as in bleach flour as a whitening agent. Apparently impatient American markets can't wait one week for wheat to whiten naturally.
c) High-fructose corn syrup. You know the drill: Stay away from this stuff! Why? Besides giving you a sugar high, it depletes your body of essential minerals and increases food cravings, which can lead to lots of serious issues like obesity.
d) DATEM. Short for diacetyl tartaric acid esters of monoglycerides, this dough conditioner ensures that all muffins are made to look the exact same. Though it is FDA approved, it has been linked to heart muscle fibrosis and adrenal overgrowth in animals.
2. EGGS: Not to sound like an episode of Portlandia here, but are they pasture-raised? Nope! These USDA Grade A eggs don't come from happy hens frolicking and pecking on pastures. They actually come from chickens who've been cooped up in dark factories where they don't even have room to spread their wings. They never see light, which means they're missing vitamin D, and their diet largely consists of only soy and corn. Free-range hens with healthy, natural diets, on the other hand, have seven times more beta carotene, three times more vitamin E, two times more omega-3's, and two-thirds more vitamin A.
3. CHEESE: Like factory chickens, no happy cows here either. This highly processed dairy product most likely comes from a cow that's been treated with synthetic hormones (rBGH) to boost milk production by about 10 percent. This practice is not only dangerous to the animal (they become lame, infertile, and suffer from infected udders) but also the consumer, hence why it's been banned in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Europe. Humans who are exposed to this milk (and its dairy products) readily absorb its byproduct, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which has been associated with breast, colon, and prostate cancers. This cheese may also contain yellow 6 dye, a food coloring that's forbidden in Norway and Sweden due to cancer-causing compounds.
4. CANADIAN STYLE BACON. Think pigs get it any better? Fat chance. They likely never set their hooves on a pasture and are probably on a strict genetically-modified food diet. So this pork is not going to be a good source of meat. Add in the other ingredients — like sugar (added just to make it more addictive), salt, sodium lactate, sodium phosphate, natural flavor (vegetable), sodium diacetate and sodium nitrite (preservatives)—and it’s definitely entered the dark side. The most dangerous content might be the sodium nitrate (used to brighten and preserve the bacon) because it contains poisonous residual heavy metals, arsenic and lead.
5. LIQUID MARGARINE. Every single item listed above has been prepared in liquid margarine, which is made of 15 ingredients, including soy lecithin and about six genetically-modified ingredients, such as partially hydrogenated soybean oil (aka trans fat)—the cause of about 50,000 premature heart attack deaths annually, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Trans fats may also increase the rise of cancer, obesity, birth defects, diabetes, depression, asthma, osteoporosis, and more.

Not for breakfast, at least not where I live. When I lived down south there was Bojangles and Biscuitville and there was no competition. Chick Fil-A is better, but there is not one conveniently located near me for breakfast. McDonald's has a better price point though.

Durrr yeah this ungodly huge company that's spent a katrillion dollars on getting people addicted to their food used all that money to make their food taste bad. Hurrr!
Also the coffee is good and its only $1 for any size.

The coffee is good, I bought a case for my Keurig machine. Costs me 0.49 cents to make any size cup at home [emoji16].
Well, people are addicted to the food not because of the taste but the crap they put in their sandwiches. If you read the article I posted, it and many others point out the amount of sugar that they put in their meals. All unnecessary sugar, this sort of stuff reeks havoc on the mind.

A lot of the salt is actually used as a preservative rather than taste enhancers.

Oh I forgot to post my weekend lunch and dinner activities in this thread! I made the dal again for lunch, and also made for dinners through the week:
Baingan Bharta - http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1014830-baingan-bharta (http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1014830-baingan-bharta) This is real good, but it was my first time making it and I don't think I let the eggplant roast long enough. It's good but doesn't have that really roasty savory eggplant flavor, I was afraid the skins were going to start burning under the broiler or something. Lesson learned, broil them longer next time! Also I used fresh tomatoes like in the recipe even though my instinct said canned would have probably been better than the dry ass ones at the store, probably should have gone with my gut.
http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2014/05/spicy-chorizo-and-pinto-bean-chili-recipe.html (http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2014/05/spicy-chorizo-and-pinto-bean-chili-recipe.html) - I love this recipe, a staple in the fuckboi household! It makes a fair amount of food and is fairly low maintenance to prepare for a chili, which is great for lazy Sundays! I tend to add fresh chiles and chipotles to the recipe. Definitely serve with scallions and cilantro, the other stuff especially sour cream or crema is great too. The only downside is that between the spices and the chorizo this is a spicy and hearty dish, so if you ate a big lunch or something you might not want it for dinner. Sensitive stomachs need not apply! I like to eat it over brown rice.

TORONTO McDonald's Canada has bad news for those looking to get their Egg McMuffin fix past 11 a.m.
Spokesperson Lisa Hutniak said the company has no plans to offer an all-day breakfast despite the brand's announcement that its American restaurants will introduce the option Oct. 6.
Twitter users were quick to decry the disparity.
"Y'all are monsters," tweeted @MsLolaOh.
A user from Scarborough, @60mg_Maija, summarized their reaction in two words: "Thug tears."
Some even made it an election issue, calling on the leaders of all three parties to address the disparity.

Maybe you're eating the wrong things, I'm fucked up if I don't eat at least a banana or something for breakfast.

One breakfast feel I really hate is when you have something like granola or cereal and then drink a lot of coffee and by like an hour before lunch time it feels like my stomach is eating itself.

The soups are actually some of the better things they have, but the sandwiches tend to be total rip offs. More importantly, the closest one is an inconvenient location to me.

Cosi's sandwiches are even worse, I got a sandwich, chips and a drink at Cosi about a month ago and it was like ten bucks and change wtf. And the sandwich had barely any chicken on it.
-
Yeah, Cosi is retarded. There's one a block away from my office but I'm more likely to walk the 3/4 mile to the Panera.
You were also a bit retarded, though, for ordering a drink from one of those places. Unless you're at a McD's with a dollar menu drink, you're gonna get charged like $2 for a regular size drink.
I do the pick two from Panera, sometimes picking a salad for one part but sometimes the soup. For the other part I take a sandwich. The sandwiches are good. This will run about $7.50 these days though. I feel like it used to be cheaper.
-

I know this but I really wanted a Diet Coke. Also not even McDonald's has decent dollar menu drinks anymore unless its coffee or iced tea, every fast food place's smallest drink is like $1.59 at least.

The sandwiches are not that great IMO and are too small and skimpy for what you pay, IMO. Some of the soups like the clam chowder, black bean and tomato are pretty good though. The French onion is awful, like about 85% of french onion soup you order in any restaurant.
-
I left work early and went to Chick Fil-A, got a spicy sandwich combo with soup instead of fries. Always a solid choice. Kinda fail that they don't offer the chicken tortilla soup as a side though I don't think, just the regular chicken soup.

Just to expand on this they're even more fucked up about coffee. There's a Cosi I like to sit and wait for appointments at because it has a nice atmosphere and is near where I'm going and a small coffee is fucking $1.99.

Panera used to have a pizza called a Crispani, and it took them like 15 minutes to cook it so it was a really long wait, lol. But it was honestly up there with the best pizza I've had. RIP the Crispani.
Best pizza you ever had, the f*ck?
I said up there with, I didn't say it was the very best. But it was quite good, the bread was thin and very crispy, with some olive oil and fresh mozzerella. Mmm. It was NOT a gay flatbread like you get at COSI. Of course, I've eaten Neapolitan pizza in Italy, which is probably as good as it gets, but the Crispani was not totally out of its depth when compared to those pizzas, tbqh. For American pizza, there's some okay Neapolitan joints here too, or I like the midwest style pizza you get from a place like Donatos.

I think traditional East Coast/NY style is the best, fursonally.

every fast food place's smallest drink is like $1.59 at least.
What a scam.

Most fast food places will give you a cup of water for nothing or really cheap if you ask but they'll probably try to sell you on getting a $2 bottle instead.

Not sure what you mean by "dry crust" but I would rather have a crust with some firmness and a bit of crisp and bite to it than a floppy rubbery meat grease sponge.

Donatos pizza crust, such that it is (thin style pizza), is moist but crispy.
New York style pizza is the type of pizza that usually ends up greasy and droopy. I'm game for NY-style pizza all the time, but overall, it doesn't rate, and never has, at least for me, where I've eaten it.

All Chinese takeout places are basically the same. Actually as far as I can tell there's like two Chinese Syscos that supply all their shit, you can tell because the good places have the thin crispy noodles for the soup and the shitty places have the thick semi-sweet ones that are garbo.
