Title: New bnet-server started
Post by: iL on February 03, 2016, 07:12:24 PM
So, because of lags and some strange problems with routing for several players, i powered up the new hosting.

Location: USA, Newark.

You can join backup.war2.ru (current backup server) to try.
Use your main login/password. User database is a copy from the main server.
I'll redirect the main server to new hosting after test period.

Another new thing is help from {Lance} with the server software development.
Logic of development:
{Lance} makes some improvements in the source code for server on his own hardware and send it to me, i inspect that code, make sure it's safe and secure, then build it myself and start on my server.
Nobody except me have access to source and binary code on my server, to user data and anything else.

Now that improved code is applied and working on the new hosting: backup.war2.ru

The main improvement is extended /command engine: opportunity to rewrite internal /commands, to make own /commands (even without restarting the server).
There are no new commands to use now, just the engine to make them.
So, let's test the new hosting with the new bnet-server together.

Plans for near future for server improvements:
- custom privileges (to set icons, transferring stats for some selected users)
- to integrate server engine with antihack
- to make additional /ban /ipban /mute functionality
- to improve some internal things (like /ignore (/permanent_ip_ignore), /friends, clans, some more internal commands)
everything is currently ready to implement most of that features.

Plans for far future are almost endless...
I hope, {Lance} will continue help us to develop things for war2 server and community. His part is really great!

Also, I joined the backup server (new server) w/ no problem.
Also would be interesting to check how it works while creating games, joining, etc. At least for few people on the server.

I hope to move the main server to new one in several days if everything is ok...

Probably the best move for the server so far. [emoji106]

Hopefully this includes allowing clan owners/leaders to set their clan icons to new members.

I wonder if one of the new /commands could be /transferstats.  Would move all the stats without having to manually add up wins and losses and edit w2bn_0_wins and w2bn_0_losses and /clearstats and all that separately.

The new command possibilities are pretty endless and they can now be developed without ever having to restart the server or touch the c/c++ code.  Also, we're moving into using PHP for development rather than C/C++ and since PHP is such an easy language to use/learn, making new commands will be about as simple as it could possibly ever get.  Heck it's so easy even Blid could make new commands with the limited PHP experience he has had with the ladder lol (not saying you should though,  just using that as an example of the ease).  But commands are not the only piece we've been working on for PHP.  I've been adding hooks in other areas such as when people login, logout, start a game, end a game, on ticks, channel joins,  etc.  Pretty much anything that is an event.  These are all things I had implemented with war2.us and are now being funneled through iL via a private bitbucket git repository.  I make a change,  it tells him exactly what lines were changed,  he then has the ability to stash the change for later or implement them right away.

yes, that was one of the reasons to change hosting. Not sure about others, i don't think everybody post troubles with the server here...

Yes, for me it's 3ms for old backup, 50ms for server and 130ms for new server.

Just try to open console and type: ping backup.war2.ru

Also interesting question is if real games will have better or worse latencies for you. Maybe we should move the server backup to Europe...

I stopped a backup server as soon as a critical security hole have been found there.
I'll restore it back as soon as it will be fixed.

Main server should work, but can crash, but should be autorestored after crash in a few minutes...

iL,

Just out of curiosity who are you hosting this server with? I work for a VPS provider that has a datacenter in Newark, if it's with them you could migrate this host over to me and I can run it for free for you, with the incentive of whatever hardware you want it to run on and up to 100gigs of space. Let me know if you are interested and I can help you out, atleast save you some money, or give you a free backup for war2.

It's Linode, is that you?
www.linode.com (http://www.linode.com)
Title: Re: New bnet-server started
Post by: GruntX on February 08, 2016, 02:59:45 PM
Yea I work for Linode. Let me know if you are interested, you would have to provide me with the linode ID for your linode and I can migrate it over to my account. The linode ID is located in your manager under linodes: should say linode#######. I can migrate it, upgrade the plan, etc.., I get $100 credit / mo for working there. I would create an account for the linode within my manager and give you access to everything on the linode (just not the ability to resize as I don't want you using my entire plan :) ) Let me know if you are interested.

If you decide that you want my help, let me know if you want this moved to Europe prior to migrating. Linode has datacenters in Frankfurt as well as London.

Well, that means you will have an access to the server data, right?
My previous experience tells me to not share the server config (and especially user database) to anyone (except 1-2 admins maybe).

About migration to Europe, that's possible if latency to Newark will be low for many people...

I don't know GruntX that well but I do know he's been a War2 player for 15-20 years like the rest of us and that he's never been involved in any drama or trouble that I'm aware of.  Seems like a pretty cool offer, definitely something to look into imo.

As long as this isn't, like, secretly Lance, who after recommending the host to iL then shows up posing as GruntX or something weird like that haha.
Title: Re: New bnet-server started
Post by: GruntX on February 08, 2016, 03:47:07 PM
1. I can provide information that would confirm that I am actually GruntX. I'm pretty sure there are still people that play that know enough about me to know that it's me not {Lance}.

2. I wouldn't need access to the server at all. You can harden the server however you wish with any passwords you like, I don't need root access to it to migrate it over to my account, or even access it at all. It would literally be like you calling up Linode and asking to move your account to a different account, the person at Linode wouldn't ask you for root access to your data. I would just add you as a user in my linode manager and give you access to the linode from within my manager, that way you aren't getting charged for it. You would have to log in to your own account to kick off the migration.

3. I have no interest in users data or anything but I understand you take that with a grain of salt. Especially nowadays. I barely even play war2 anymore, I am just offering this up for the community, being that I know you guys put a lot of effort into keeping war2 alive, regardless of whether I play or not. I have respect for that, even for {Lance}, at least he's trying to help out.

Based on what I have seen in the last 6 months or so i honestly don't think someone compromising the server data is a real threat.

The server is dead. I know people don't like to hear it but it is in extremely bad shape right now. It is hard to get a game. It sucks.

Obviously it's your call, but at this point this server is just slightly more valuable than a cow with no milk.

You pretty much have nothing to lose....

I recommended it because I knew GruntX worked there.  Then I could pretend to be GruntX and get the ser.... what garbage.  I've heard that rodeo call before.  I recommended it because I use it myself among other services.  It's cheap, reliable (well except for this past Christmas for about 12 days which I'm sure GruntX can tell you all about considering it targeted Atlanta and Newark), and easy to manage.  Everything that a war2 server would need.  The DDOS protection that it has is not the best but it is good enough for our purposes.  If he offered to move it to his account, I can tell you though, he wouldnt need a pw to access the server at all (hyperviser is KVM and Xen, no need for PW).  It's a risk worth taking none the less if it's free.  Heck he probably could do it without the Linode Account.  They can look up accounts by IP as well, and move it without your authorization.  :P

But really, if it's something he can offer free,  I'd take it.

I don't think money is an issue. This would be a possible security risk, and maybe issues like occult forums. Not being able to get the data we need if shit hits the fan with host. Terrible idea! Not saying nothing bad about you grunt just don't know you and hard to compare with the risks with that....

Well to be fair,  he could do that with or without iL's knowing or authorization.  Since he could do it anyway,  why not just take the offer :P  If he's going to do somethin bad (which is not likely),  he'll do it.  Better to have it done on a free server than one you're paying for I suppose heh.

Technically, about how to steal data for hosting owner: the easiest way is to insert a boot CD and reboot. Then do everything you need and reboot again.

Well to be fair,  he could do that with or without iL's knowing or authorization.
If he is an employee in hosting company, there's a big difference: to get data from your own hosting or to steal it from one of clients...

(That's not an accusation against anybody, just a technical explaination.)

I don't know our members of community well, i know GruntX as a good and old player, i never heared about any conflicts between him and others, so maybe it's just a paranoia. But every admin is a little paranoid.
When i keep the server that means people trust me their personal data. At the same time what private data could be located on the server (except passwords, that are reversable and that means people should never use the same passwords anywhere else, i told about that also).
Also our community is small and almost dead, that's true.

So, I'd say it's up to community. If people trust someone, let it be so. If someone distrust, we can keep separately and pay it ourselves. I don't think $10-$20 per month is a big problem for most war2 players.

At the same time this forum is working fine on mousey's hosting and nothing bad still happened.

I also think  we should trust people who can and want to help. Most people really care of war2, community and want to help.

If you want to email me at my linode e-mail address it's rschneberger@linode.com. Not sure why {lance} is posting from a linode IP, but I am replying from work. I don't have a ton of time to go back and forth proving i'm not {lance}, I could answer any questions that would pertain to me about war2 over the past 15 years or so. Not sure how much of it is considered general knowledge though. Pretty sure I used to play against you and Ning19 or Skeletron on HEAT/Zone with MeXiCaN or Jonboy. I think you would always go 1 dragon. Thing is if {Lance} was M_Lance_G he would probably know the same shit.

For those of you not in the know (blid for example),  I use verizon 4G for internet now using my grandfathered unlimited plan.  If you have one,  you'll know that verizon purposely degrades connections to certain gaming sites associated with blizzard.  This includes these forums as well as forums from blizzard (hearthstone, etc).  I mentioned the intermittent network connectivity issues to Mousetopher months ago (she may remember that) and we determined that it was not her server.  I narrowed it down to Verizon and so I now use a proxy when viewing blizzard related sites and the thing works perfectly.  So yes I do post on the forums with a Linode address because it's my proxy to get around Verizon's BS.  Those of you who use Verizon may also notice that the forums here are very unreliable, often having to hit "refresh" over and over to get a page to load.  Well, it's because they are throttling anything associated with blizzard as far as I can tell.  Why,  I have no idea but a proxy fixes the problem.

Yessir,  tether I do (actually I tether a netgear R7000 router, but yes tethering).  I have a better 4G signal here than any other isp available such as cable/dsl.  I do development work so I require a higher upstream than downstream.  4G gives me a 10MBit upstream and the highest available upstream in this area is cable at 3MBit.  The downstreams and ping times are about the same for both (50MBit, 75ms).  The only con for the 4G is that it allows no incoming connections so I cant host war2 games and it does throttle anything related to the company "Blizzard" but only on port 80 which is the strangest thing I've ever seen (which I have fixed via proxy that blid has noticed).  I do not play enough to justify getting a wired connection just to host war2 games or view the blizzard related forums without a proxy.  Upstream for work related times to me is more important than any of those cons.

I confirm. So it's Blizzard-related stuff general huh? That's really weird.

Well, that is an interesting problem and i think that should be analyzed carefully. There's a lot of people who may use the same ISP or to have similar problems with different ISP.
(I know at least 1 russian who have better connection to war2 server via VPN than directly.)

Is that problem related to that question we talked a while ago when i told about symmetric NAT?

It is yes,  right around the time we were talking about it, Verizon was in the middle of rolling out their new network rules.  Previously I had NO problems with 4G on verizon connecting to the forums and I could also host games via a Proxy from Dec 2014 to Jun 2015.  Then at the beginning of July I could no longer host because of the issues we were talking about.  Then I started noticing that it was not only affecting game hosting, but Blizzard themed websites as well.  Basically anything that has blizzard game names associated with it gets throttled and severely crippled when using Verizon grandfathered Unlimited 4G accounts.  I still cannot host, but I've fixed the intermittent network problems with blizzard websites by using a proxy.  I have to view these forums as well as the Hearthstone forums via a proxy.  Otherwise, if I dont,  then I have to constantly refresh the site in order to get it to load.  I have tried using other people's verizon phones and experienced the same refresh problem.  It's most noticeable when you post and then try to edit the post directly afterwards.  The edit page simply never loads.  Or when you try to submit, it will sit there and never complete.  Forcing you to refresh over and over and over until it eventually works.  All of these problems are solved with a proxy (except for hosting which still no longer works).

i know we kinda running off topic but...went for the cheaper 35$ 4g 500mb card gonna let it just 2g out..the other card 50$ 3gb then 2g i barely even used the net on, except some youtube music at work, used 2gb and that was lightly.

ive not been highspeed for long 56k till 2012 and i had the pimpest 56k setup still miss it call in's call out's auto connect everyhour to get Big Files...

for those who are not grandfathered in and in 2g range or limits or 56k use keepvid.com to get youtube stuff and they are some online video editors if u know how to set will give even better results.
invention of .mp4 dam shake that dudes hand! gone to drink.

"they" must have balls of steel to offer 56K for anything other than them paying you to use it.  If you didnt make any money from using their 56K connection, you were jipped.  I wouldnt use 56K even if I was paid 1K/week.

I will use 56k internet for $1k/week.  Any ISPs out there looking to pay me to use slow internet hit me up.
