No need, me and warhammer we're in a game. Soon as it was over, I got disconnected from the server. Tried to reconnect, would just get stuck at "check version". A few other players were also having the same issue as we talked on backup.ru, you can check channel log for that.

I see, so "connecting to the fastest server" is ok, get stuck at "check version"? No idea what it can be, i'll try to look, but i didn't touch anything related to that. Versioncheck is totally disabled.
How often that happens? Each 10-th time or 1 time of 2 or maybe at any definite moment of day?
I'll try to find that in backup server logs also...

It has happened once a week, each week for 3 weeks for me. I don't know about others. Definitely a recurring problem for me...never happened on the previous three hosts.

I just witnessed this issue as well. Was in game, soon as it ended, the server no longer responded. My bots that were in the channel also could not perform any commands. Its like there is a firewall stopping all traffic but not dropping existing connections first. My bots never 'lost connection', but they didnt function either because server wouldnt reply with responses. When disconnected, they all get stuck at the "Checking Version" screen. After about 15 minutes, the server started to respond again, like some sort of firewall rule expired.

That is interesting. So, did you see any new messages in bots chats? I mean bots should check connection state from time to time, so if network is down they should look like online for several minutes.
Also it's possible that server keep working established tcp connections but rejecting new.
When disconnected, they all get stuck at the "Checking Version" screen.
That's interesting because that means "connecting to the fastest server" step succeed, stuck at the 2-nd step. So connection haven't been blocked totally.
Would be interesting to check if ping server.war2.ru worked at that time.
After about 15 minutes, the server started to respond again, like some sort of firewall rule expired.
Yes, looks like some kind of protection embedded to hosting, but it's not my part of protection.
I'll try to contact hosting support, but i have no idea what to let them check.
Was there any additional activity from your ip to server when it happened?
A question about established or time_wait or w/e connections between you and server during the problem. I think could be possible to check netstat right after the problem caused, connections should not be removed immediately...
-
Hmm, again at 10:15'ish the server died. It still pings, bots dont respond, and I am stick at version again. 2nd night in a row I've noticed it at about this time. Maybe it's a scheduled thing?

Again, around 10:15pm (EDT) the server stopped replying to commands/traffic. 3rd day in a row at the SAME time. Thats no coincidence. Bots cant run server commands, cant talk in channel, the server replies to pings but nothing else.

Sure, but... not so easy to enforce ddos attack quickly if he is not ready, also some additional checks are implemented, also ddos is more a problem to hoster than to host, they can just enable it back at any moment.
Nope won't let me login at 10:15 - will edit back.
You mean that didn't help? Problem repeated?

The problem is clearly what I first suggested a few weeks ago when I asked if it was a cron related issue. Obviously it is, but if there are no cron jobs on your server between 2AM GMT and 3AM GMT (which is 10pm EDT - 11PM EDT), then it's a cronjob related to the host itself. I dont have any ideas as for a reason for why they would do this other than to increase revenues for service calls if they charge for that sort of thing lol. A question I have is, why do you keep using european hosts? Everytime you've used one you have issues. Is there a specific reason why you do not use a UK, US, CA, or AU host? If it's money related, I am sure there are quite a few people here who have hosts in these more modern countries that you could utilize (self included). I'm even willing to bet that those of us who have hosts that you could use would offer them for free (I know I would).
-
Dump the new host, it sucks and isn't worth the trouble to try fix it.

I would rather stay with iL than mouse. She doesn't even play much, knows nothing about programming and security, her server lags with more than 20 ppl on it (cheap home internet). Lance is the best option.

I thought about US server, but the only one with DDoS protection is located in Netherlands. I think about to move it to US (same money), but losing DDoS protection.

Hm, really free? With no terms? If you give your host you have an access to it, I don't think people will be happy to give you an access to their database or w/e.

Looks reasonable, the main problem is DDoS attacks to it. Every hoster at least stop service for 12-24 hours if it repeated.

No, i don't use my work hardware for war2, i separate war2 and work. Well, actually Blid pays for the server now. Thanks a lot to him.

It's the 10pm cronjob that this host has. It happens every day around 10pm (10:05 is the soonest I've been able to track it, but thats pretty close to 10pm EDT). It can last anywhere from 5 to 30 mins.
-
damn Cron jobs. I'd rather have a blow job or a walk job.
-
It came back up at 10:23. My bots commands (which I entered at 10:07pm) completed at 10:23pm. I typed /con at 10:07pm and it actually sent the reply back at 10:23pm.

disagree. there was a lot of ddos attacks and theyre always related to some kind of nerd drama, which happen regularly
-
are there any other problems except get stuck at checking versions 10pm EDT or that is the only problem with new hosting?
-
It's complete network pause for REPLIES. The connections do not drop, they still accept input, its just that they do not REPLY. It has only happened with this new host and it only happens from 10PM to 10:30pm EDT. The only replies that the server will honor are ICMP Pings. This is why it gets to the "Checking Version" screen, the screens before this do not care if the server replies to anything other than a ping (which it does). But the checking versions actually expects a real reply, but it does not get one so it hangs right there and times out. I'm wondering if it's DDOS related to an attack that the host tried to mitigate at some point (not related to War2 at all) that affects ALL of their clients. This to me seems like the only logical explanation for kind of network outage. It's like they are trying to protect against a DDOS that happened at a certain time of the day/night. There will not be anything you can do other than contact the host and tell them everything that we have discovered. OR just change to a real host, DDOS protection or not. As for US servers not having DDOS protection....... erm, thats just non-sense. Nearly ALL of them have it. Well, the worthwhile hosts that is. If you need a list of them, I know them all.
-
Well, they do reply, but the replies come in literally 20mins later lol. As seen with my bot command attempts. IE: /con didnt fail, but it didnt produce any output either until AFTER the server started replying and the /con that it sent, was the /con from when I typed /con and not at the time that the server came back up. So the server did try to send the reply, but the network itself held it until the problem stopped and then sent it. This is why I still dont think this is a good host because if they are actually trying to mitigate a DDOS of some sort, it's not working very well because all it does is pause things. It doesnt actually kill anything at all.
-
...As for US servers not having DDOS protection....... erm, thats just non-sense. Nearly ALL of them have it. Well, the worthwhile hosts that is. If you need a list of them, I know them all.
Correct, it's somewhat a standard practice here in the U.S. for servers to have some level of DoS protection. Might be a good idea to let Lance identify what servers could best serve the communities needs in a reasonable budget. Or the latter...let him host it for free and configure the network [emoji16], why else have a network engineer. The guy clearly has best interest at heart for the game and community. Shown by his daily activity on the server. I mean dam...we give Dellam hundreds of chances why not give Lance another try!

Well, if the problem is limited to a weird blackout at 10 10:30PM EST then I hope that the host can identify what's going on at that time and correct it. If they can't then yeah we need to change hosts.

Moved timezone for server.
Let me know if it will happen again in 10pm EDT or another time.

What timezone was the server originally, and what is it now? Knowing those 2 items we should be able to calculate what time it would go down again if it is indeed a server cron job causing the issue.

Well, Blid is correct. It's not the host. But in my eyes thats even more troubling. Why? Well, because iL has had root access to the server since it was turned on. That tells me that he's not capable of figuring out how to fix it himself. If that is the case, then the problems would persist no matter WHAT host he uses. It sounds to me like he's just not capable of figuring out what is wrong. Personally I believe it's a cron job on the server (obviously since I've been using the word 'cron' the whole time) in hopes that iL would check those more closely. But it doesnt look like that has been helping at all. I'm a little disappointed as I was hoping that it would actually be the host and not the server itself so that iL wouldnt be the person to blame. But now...... there is no choice :/ iL is definitely to blame here if he does indeed have root access to this server.
-

Time moved to 3 hrs, that's fine!
So the problem is localized. Hosting is ok, it's just my fault.
I'll fix that myself to next time, so that will not happen again.

Sure, that's absolutely my fault, i should check that a week ago, but got that idea just yesterday.
I still have no idea what happens with the server, but it happens at 3AM by the server time and it's a daily cron job.
That was not my own cron job located in the system crontab, that's why i didn't find it before.
That is what happens during emergent server migration and hard reconfiguration and when the moment is not the best for me.
Problems appear, then they are being resolved once and should never be repeated until next server migration.
But solution is the easiest for now: i'll just move the timezone to make 3AM happen when nobody plays and will resolve it when i have time. I also guess the problem could be resolved already by rotating big logs.
-
Changing the time zone to a less busy time will be an improvement, but there will probably still be people on playing who get interrupted.

It's not the host. There's something on the server that has been doing stuff at a certain time. iL may have identified it and fixed it but we'll have to wait and see.
-
So didn't I see a post where lance said iL isn't capable of fixing this? Good job iL!
Considering that I identified the problem WEEKS ago without even having access to the server..... ya, I'd say he's not really capable of fixing it. If it takes you weeks to fix something thats already been identified, then you cant really say you 'fixed' anything. If you took a vehicle to a repair shop, told them that the battery was dead and then they proceeded to try every test EXCEPT the battery, would you consider them competent mechanics if they eventually changed the battery 3 weeks later? I like iL, but this latest discovery is rather disappointing :/ I thought he was a little better at server administration than he is I guess.
-

There is no reason you can't contribute and share code dude. It shows you just want power..... your smart don't get me wrong.
Remember there is a reason why you "created all that magnificent stuff in one month.." but it wasn't used ever.
Edit:
So what's up with this cron issue bottle necking the server? Ddos protection, back up, etc? Low on ram or garbage cpu??
Very possible since it's a vps and non dedicated hardware. That the main system on the host side is the issue.

Please, stop making excuses for everyone. It's his job as server administrator to do all these things...keep the server up and maintained...fight against "cyber criminals". If he is finding it difficult to balance these duties around his life, simple, let someone else do it. I think there is a difference between having to figure something out and actually being told what the problem is. If you're told what the problem is, it shouldnt take but maybe 1-2 minutes to fix (which was the case here). See, in a previous thread I had flat out told iL that it was very likely a cron job causing the problem. Do you know what his response to that was? He specifically said he had eliminated that as a possible cause. So I took his word for it and then the next obvious cause was the host itself. But now, weeks later, we're finding out that it was indeed my very first suggestion of a cronjob being the issue. How do you fix that? Here, I'll show you.
Below is the bad cronjob
0 21 * * * Do Something here
And here is the fix.
#0 21 * * * Do something here
Now tell me in what world would that fix take days, weeks, hours, hell even minutes? Now maybe you'll see where my disappointment comes from. Because it really is THAT simple to stop a cronjob from starting. Simply comment it out. Done. Then in spare time, try to figure out WHY cronjob was misbehaving. Changing the time it runs is not the answer. Completely disabling it IS the answer.
-
I think iL just doesnt have the time anymore. Even simple things take days and weeks to complete.

Lol whoa let's hold on a sec...your own server? Don't you think that is kind of exaggerating your abilities there bud lol...you choose to put in Ru because there is no where else to put it [emoji50]
Someone didn't get me a icon? Lol [emoji23], from that I can already tell you are clearly lost and confused. I never said iL didn't work hard on the server, I am just saying it's not good enough because if it was the server wouldn't be in the current state it is...
P.S. Are you playing dumb like you usually claim to do because I am starting to get worried about your mental health [emoji47]...
....
You all want lance to run the server go ahead. You think he can prevent cyber criminals?? ROFL NO ONE CAN.
Think you safer with lance???? Just remember when crystaldawn got defaced with that war2 nazi shit rofl.

Yes, i agree with your analogy.
That was definitely my fault.
Below is the bad cronjob
0 21 * * * Do Something here
And here is the fix.
#0 21 * * * Do something here
Just a technical note from me: There was not "0 21 * * * Do Something here", otherwise i'd comment it. I think that was someting like /etc/cron.daily, i still didn't find anything suspicious there...
Nothing suspicious in crontab also.
Of course that doesn't excuse me, just a note. Definitely my fault.
*in sackcloth and ashes*
Please, stop making excuses for everyone. It's his job as server administrator to do all these things...
Your rhetoric against me have been changed definitely 3 weeks ago.
I'd say that was a reason for my idling and apathy.
I didn't expect that your turn from my friend to my enemy will make me so sad.
Well, i hope i almost got it, so i hope to revive my activity for the server.
-
Mmm, yes I was givng an example of how easy it is to disable cronjobs. Disabling daily is just as simple the only difference that it's in the cron dir as a file rather than as a cronjob entry for a user. I'm pretty sure that its a cron problem, but which cron it is, is something I can only take guesses at since I cant see the crons that are actually running. If it's to difficult to figure out which one. Just disable the cron service completely. That would rule out a Cron job for CERTAIN.
-
So whats the status of disabling the cron job on the server? My bots keep dying at 5am, its annoying to have to reboot them everytime I get up :P Simply moving the cronjob to a different time isnt fixing anything. Just disable it. What cronjob is the problem anyway? Just the log rotation crap (which isnt even really need anyway)?
-
Surprised this problem hasn't been resolved yet [emoji46]...what bot are you running Lance? Just have it auto reconnect on disconnect.

Well, looks like i've been wrong again: it was not any kind of daily jobs, it's my custom job however. I've just been confused by timezones and didn't locate it right after it happened.
Now i can definitely say it's a database backup by mysqldump.
Wondering why is it happen so here but not on the previous hosting where it worked also every day.
The only idea is mysqldump is blocking tables wjile working, but i can't see how that can cause connections freezes...

Nobody is going to play on a server with lazy inactive admins. Me and EQ told you this many times before. If you want things to continue going in the direction they are, keep doing what you are doing. In 3 months there will be 20 users on. The current Admin team is never going to be able to revive the game.

So you think the servers specs are causing the database back up to max cpu or something?
-
Ypu can try non-table locking backups. I can also tell you why it would do that. You have channel loggin enabled which logs everything. If you try to run a backup and the server is mega slow (which it sounds like it is. Then you will have problems. Disable channel logging or use non-locking backups. You can google how to do nonlocking backups there are lots of howtos for that.
-
It has been down pretty much all day today. It's responding extremely slowly like it's running at 100% CPU or something or possibly out of memory.
-
and repairing to the server at low again has more players on normally
-
Really archer you still continue to harm the community now spam bots? You didn't even hit 1k what a fucking newb. 10k or gtfo

some people entering the server and nomalmente here or login to blight
-
Hows it goin archie buddy ol' pal. I still have your pet lizard in my freezer, saving it for the pig roast.
-
lol kkkkkk ;D ;D ;D
-
BLID, MOUSE some one ban the bots or the server will keep lagging.
-
this is why we need admins who actually log on the game.
-
They need that tapatalk so they get PM's like text messages. Thx ryu.
-
Ol' archie should figure out how to stop those bots because he knows I'll have a talk to dad at the drop of a hat whether he likes it or not. So if he wants to claim they "arent mine!" then he best be finding out who it is and either take THEM out, or fess up and just knock off the bullshit. Either way, dad gets a call if shit doesnt stop because iL and I both know and can prove that it is archer.
This lizard is looking scrumptious btw. Kinda strange he'd be eatin at a pig roast though, dont ya think archie? LMFAO.
-
Archer is dumb he hacked mouseys server here in the usa with out proxy.
Chase what type of bird don't fly?
-
Lets just put it this way. Proxy or no proxy, we are on to him picka style ;)

Ahhh. All's quiet on the "western" front. Good call archie buddy ol' pal. Now run along like a good little lizard before someone gets hurt.

Changed table locking option before backup today.
Check if it happened or not today.
I hope i removed that lag (unfortunately was busy and wasn't able to join and test).

I'll disable the bot's reconnect script and see if it has issues again since I'm usually not up at 5am ;)
