I won $300 on a scratch off once.  I've also seen someone hit $500 on a scratch off, $5,000 on a scratch off $100,000 on a scratch off and another hit $250,000 on the Mega Millions.  Sadly, most people end up spending more than they win back though.  A book of scratch offs cost $300.  If you bought the entire book you would probably win back $200 or less.  A few hundred dollars are pretty rare and the bigger prizes are extremely rare.  The people I've mentioned above, excluding myself, put big money into the lottery.  The guy who won $250,000 spent at least $5,000 or more and bought his tickets from different stores.  I think he's still trying to hit the jackpot.

Server.War2.ru / Re: This is why War2 will die pretty damn quick.

Absolutely NOBODY that has any type of moderator or administrative powers over the server or forum is actively involved in the actual community.

nobody (iL, Blid, Mouse, Burnt, or even LB when he was still admin) actually play war2 on a regular basis.

all of them do things outside of actual game play .. hosting tournaments,  moving threads around on the forums, deleting threads on the forums, locking threads on the forums, banning people from the forums, muting people on the forums, warning people on the forums, and creating updates to the actual server  ... but none of them actually get in games and interact with the community on a regular basis

how tha fuck is a game going to thrive when the people in charge of it don't even give a shit about playing it?

be honest. thanks.

I think a post like this is counterproductive and petty.  I see no reason to complain about the admins not playing the game.  I honestly think you're seeking attention with this post and you're just trying to stir up trouble.

The question I've posed since I started posting on this forum is why the "actual community" you speak of isn't more involved?  The admins are all long time players who have stepped up to help keep this server going.  All of them are volunteers and contribute their time because they have something to offer that they enjoy doing.

You're singling out the admins, but the truth is that a lot of us have stopped playing as much as we used to or have stopped playing altogether.  I seek to help the server because I would like to see this game prosper and I enjoy problem solving.  I also feel it's to my benefit that I'm learning new things just by volunteering my time.  I'm sure the admins can relate to that as well.  Although I'm not an admin, I don't play nearly as much as I used to and I've never been more active on the forum than I am now.  I've always loved this game and certainly wish I could play more but my lifestyle at the moment just doesn't allow it.  By the time I've played 1 or 2 games now, I'm ready to move on to something else in order to accomplish something of value throughout my day.  Some of us can live and breathe War2 but it's not healthy in the long run.  We're all getting older and most of the people I've met throughout the time I've played on this server rarely play anymore or have stopped playing altogether.  They have shifted their focus on more important things in their lives.

I've probably offered more than I should to this post as it's likely to provoke a hostile response.  I assure you I am not posting this to offend or insult you in any way.  I only wish to point out that this type of thinking is unnecessary, irrational, and has more of a negative impact on the server in comparison to the admins not playing regularly.  We must be reasonable with one another, maintain a positive outlook, and help each other out any way we can.  Have good faith in what we're all trying to do here and understand that any complaints you have can be handled differently than your approach here.

Tournaments & Leagues / Re: Community Tournaments Project

As for "Tournaments" section, i believe tournaments are highly related to server.war2.ru and should be posted in that section

I recommended this because I think it's more organized and promotes participation to have an official board/section for this.  The server.war2.ru board is a good board to post the tournaments though.  I'm a little more concerned about the links but if they are linked from the website, then it's probably unnecessary to have them on the forum.

bozeman site looks better, challonge brackets are ugly

Never thought I'd hear that.  It's worth noting how you feel about it and if others feel the same I think we should have a vote on it.  Thank you for the feedback.

Tournaments & Leagues / Community Tournaments Project
« on: April 04, 2015, 05:38:49 PM »
I thought I'd create a new topic for this as two of the projects I'm working on are related to hosting tournaments.  I might as well combine them at this point.  I will be updating my progress for these projects on this thread from now on.

Please refer to these threads for a little background on the projects I've been working on:

http://forum.war2.ru/index.php/topic,707.0.html
http://forum.war2.ru/index.php/topic,751.0.html

The calendar project has been going well.  We now have a calendar embedded on the server.war2.ru website and players are now able to add events to it by creating events in the War2 Server Facebook group.  A form may eventually be created to submit your event to the calendar.  Notable events in War2’s history are still in the process of being added and I will keep updating the community with those dates as they are added.

With Challonge.com, players are capable of hosting their own WarCraft II tournaments all in one place.  I’ve done all I can on it for the moment.  I hope to see this incorporated into the website eventually.

Here is what I think should be seen as the ideal process for hosting tournaments:

1. Create an event in the War2 Server Group on Facebook.  Once created, it will automatically be added to the WarCraft II calendar on the website.

2. Sign up for Challonge.com and submit your username here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zs9JfvucHdBZxa-mDdY2etB3jnDpkri_rea1lcP8vVc/viewform in order to gain permissions to host tournaments in the WarCraft II organization.  (You don't have to do this every time you want to host a tournament.  Once you're added, you're in.)

3. Once approved, create a tournament at http://war2.challonge.com in order to manage the brackets.

4. Create a thread on the server.war2.ru forum with information about your tournament (date, time, map, etc.) and links to the Facebook event page and Challonge.com tournament registration page.

5. On the day of your tourney send participants to http://en.war2.ru/tournies to view the brackets. (If you're using our Challonge.com War2 group then your tourney brackets will automatically be embedded here and updated in real time.)

I will be hosting a tournament soon to demonstrate this process in hopes that it will inspire more players to do the same and host their own tournaments.  It would be nice to see more community participation, which I feel would be of great benefit to the server.

I’d also like to propose adding a “Tournaments” section to the forum.  A board for tournament announcements and information would be great as well as links to the WarCraft II Challonge page and tournament host registration form.  These links would also be a nice replacement in the tournaments section on the website.  If we get Challonge embedded on the website we can just switch out the links later.

I know some things that are related to this project as a whole are being looked into and tested and some of what I proposed may be subject to change.  Please feel free to discuss this with me, make your own recommendations, and let me know if you think anything I've proposed could be done in a better way.

The WarCraft II Challonge page has been updated with a link to server.war2.ru and a link to a new form to request permissions to host tournaments for WarCraft II.  I figured this would be easier than having to PM or email me.

Here is a link to the form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zs9JfvucHdBZxa-mDdY2etB3jnDpkri_rea1lcP8vVc/viewform

Rit you need admin on the fb pages to do what you were planning?

Nope.  I had originally thought it was a page and then realized it was a group.  Turns out any member of the War2 Facebook group can create an event.  In fact, I've just finished setting up the sync between the group's Facebook events and the calendar on the website.  I've tested it and it works great.  The events are added to the calendar in the format of: (Start Time) (Event Name)

The Facebook group has over 1,000 members.  This is absolutely the best place to start advertising an event as it's likely to attract more people.

Also, I'd like to acknowledge the fact that this would not be possible without all of the hard work you've put in over the past few years.  The Dark Warrior videos, the tournaments, and advertising have helped keep this server going as time began to take it's toll on it.  This is what has helped accumulate over 1,000 members in a Facebook group.  Thank you for everything you've done to keep this server and game alive.

The 60men tournament begins April 10, (i just picked the first friday that im available to manage it)

I tried to add to the calendar today but it said my token was invalid or something (maybe i waited too long to click the invitation link)

If u can add my tournament start date thatd be cool!!!

I'll look into the problem tonight.  I can add it but I think we should try to make it work on your side.  If I do end up having to add it:  On April 10, is there a specific time? Is it an all day event?  Will it span over a few days?

The 60men 1v1 Tournament has been added as an all day event on April 10th.  Please let me know if you would like to add a specific time. I'll resend the invite to the calendar.  I think the problem is that it's not a gmail address.  If you have the same problem, I recommend creating a gmail account.

Update: We could create a Facebook event for this in the War2 group as it would give it more exposure.  Now that I've synced the War2 group's Facebook events to the calendar, once the event is created on Facebook it will then be added to the calendar.  Please let me know the time it will occur if you'd like for me to create the Facebook event for you.

There already are wordpress plugins that do the same thing and you don't need to rely on any 3rd party sites

https://wordpress.org/plugins/bracketpress/

Indeed.  We're currently taking a look at it.

Look great i will probably need this.

Awesome.  If you've signed up already, please let know me what your username is and I will add you as a member.

Archer has access to post events on the calendar but I'm not sure if he has posted anything yet.

Reasons Challonge.com would be a better alternative:

1. More attractive.
2. Players will be able to host their own tournaments.
3. Players can vote on open matches and make bracket predictions.
4. Game screenshots can be uploaded to the bracket.
5. Players have the option to change their display name for the tournaments to reflect the username that they use on the server.  For example, my account name is "RitTheMonkey" but when I sign up for a tournament I can use "spirit".  Most of the names at turnier.bozeman.de have been created by tournament hosts and the players are now unable to claim their names on there.  Players can be added manually without having to sign up on Challonge also.
6. Teams can be created and have their own Challonge page.

http://war2.challonge.com/

I have created an "Organization" for WarCraft II on Challonge.com for player hosted tournaments.  In order to join the WarCraft II organization and host tournaments on Challenge.com, please sign up for Challonge.com and reply or PM me with your username.

Any chance a link could be added under the Tournaments section on the website?  I really recommend using this as a replacement for turnier.bozeman.de as well.  It's also possible to embed the brackets on a website.

The following dates have just been added to the calendar:

April 30, 1996 - WarCraft II: Beyond The Dark Portal Expansion Set NA Release
April 30, 1997 - WarCraft II: Beyond The Dark Portal Expansion Set EU Release
October 8, 1999 - WarCraft II: Battle.Net Edition Release

I've also changed the format of the events and descriptions.

Sounds great will help out however I can.

I've been trying to get in touch with you about syncing the calendar with Facebook Events.  It looks like I'm able to create an event for the War2 Facebook page without any special privileges.  This could be another option for players who host tournaments.  They could create the Facebook event and have it added to the Google Calendar automatically.

Now that I'm really researching this, I think I may be able to take care of this on my own.  I'm not really sure we can sync to the calendar directly from the War2 Facebook page when an event is created.  However, I could create a Facebook account and subscribe to the War2 Facebook Events and easily sync it that way.
