As of 2004 or so, the top players were almost certainly:

KHB
Ash
Valkrie, even without hacking
yah'mon although he may have hacked
Nerzyman

There were great players before that, like DethWlkr and Azteca. And those two were likely better than some of the above when all played regularly. But they stopped and the others got better.

And I wonder if there have been any major updates in how the game is played in the last 17 years. Maybe faster mouse clicking and all. But what do people do differently now?

The King of the Hillbilly series is probably the best way to analyze this.

Only one here I haven’t played with much is Nerzyman. The rest are no where near the top in 2021.

Biggest things I think are customizable hotkeys and replays. In 2004 it wasn’t as easy to rewatch games of top players.

The game has changed a bit, it's widely accepted for people to edit hotkeys and utilize macro's these days. Apparently cheating has become acceptable, which is why most people who have posted in this threads opinions are worthless.
